Spoiler warning: The July 4, 2025, New York Times Connections puzzle was game #754. The broadest hint is also the key to the whole board: each category points to a different two-letter abbreviation—ID, IN, LA, or OK.
Hints for Connections #754 on July 4, 2025
Try these clues before reading the complete groups:
- Yellow: What might “ID” refer to?
- Green: What might “IN” refer to?
- Blue: What might “LA” refer to?
- Purple: What might “OK” refer to?
These are not ordinary categories such as places, science terms, or things associated with a particular activity. The four groups are built around abbreviations and shorthand. That is why the puzzle can initially feel as though its words have nothing in common.

How each group works
Yellow: What “ID” might refer to
The yellow group is:
DRIVER LICENSE, FREUDIAN CONCEPT, IDAHO, RECOGNIZE
- A DRIVER LICENSE is a form of identification, commonly shortened to “ID.” The tile uses the exact wording DRIVER LICENSE.
- In Freudian psychology, the id is one of the components of the personality.
- ID is the United States postal abbreviation for Idaho.
- To RECOGNIZE someone or something is to identify it.
Green: What “IN” might refer to
The green group is:
INCH, INDIANA, INSIDE, TRENDY
- An INCH is abbreviated “in.”
- IN is the postal abbreviation for Indiana.
- INSIDE means “in.”
- Something fashionable or TRENDY can be described as “in.”
Blue: What “LA” might refer to
The blue group is:
LANTHANUM, LOS ANGELES, LOUISIANA, MUSICAL NOTE
- La is the chemical symbol for lanthanum.
- LA is a common abbreviation for Los Angeles.
- LA is the postal abbreviation for Louisiana.
- La is a solfège musical note.
LANTHANUM is the most specialized entry in this group. If the chemical symbol is not familiar, the other three uses of “LA” can help reveal the pattern.
Purple: What “OK” might refer to
The purple group is:
BRITISH MAGAZINE, GREENLIGHT, MEDIOCRE, OKLAHOMA
- BRITISH MAGAZINE refers specifically to OK!, the celebrity magazine.
- A GREENLIGHT means approval or authorization—an “OK.”
- MEDIOCRE can mean merely acceptable, or “OK.”
- OK is the United States postal abbreviation for Oklahoma.
The purple category is especially dependent on the wording of its clues. “BRITISH MAGAZINE” is not a broad magazine category; it points to the title OK!.
Why this Connections puzzle was difficult
The board deliberately mixed several kinds of references. A U.S. state, a city, a chemical element, a psychological concept, a unit of measurement, a musical note, and ordinary definitions do not look like a natural group at first glance. The solution only becomes clear when you stop asking what the words describe and start asking what short form each clue can produce.
The biggest red herring was the group of state references:
Recommended Free Tools
- IDAHO → ID
- INDIANA → IN
- LOUISIANA → LA
- OKLAHOMA → OK
All four states appear to belong together, but they are deliberately split across the four categories. Each state supplies one of the puzzle’s two-letter abbreviations. Selecting all four as a group would therefore prevent the rest of the abbreviation pattern from emerging.
The unusual tiles provide further difficulty. FREUDIAN CONCEPT points to the lowercase word “id,” while LANTHANUM contributes the symbol “La.” At the other end of the familiarity scale, BRITISH MAGAZINE requires recognizing the publication name OK!, rather than simply thinking of a type of magazine.

Was there a conflicting answer key?
Yes. One July 4, 2025 article labeled as puzzle #754 displayed a different set of answers involving parts of a wheel, military clothing descriptions, ventilation, and missed opportunities. That answer set conflicts with the word list and solution reported by multiple other puzzle guides and contemporaneous player discussions.
For this date and puzzle number, the abbreviation-based solution above is the supported answer key. The conflicting page appears to be a publication or content-matching error rather than an alternate solution to the same board.
