These are the hints and answers for NYT Connections puzzle #416, published Wednesday, July 31, 2024. The clues come first; the answer key below is clearly marked for spoilers. This is the 2024 puzzle, not a July 31 puzzle from another year.
Hints for Connections #416
The New York Times describes Connections as a 16-word puzzle in which players sort the words into four groups of four. The groups are color-coded: yellow is the easiest and purple the trickiest. These clue-only nudges follow the group clues published by Parade.
- Not very smooth: Think of words that could describe a rough-sounding voice.
- Related to certain extremities: Consider names for digits on a hand.
- What you might see listed at a brewery: Look for kinds of beer.
- They can all share the same first word: Add one common word before each of four different expressions.
Several words can plausibly fit more than one theme. That overlap is intentional: the New York Times Help Center says, “Each puzzle has exactly one solution and is meant to be tricky by having words that could fit into multiple categories.” If a grouping seems ambiguous, solving the more direct sets first can leave a clearer pattern among the remaining words.
