The safest opening is to look for the four seasonings—ANISE, DILL, MACE, and SAGE—then identify the compound shades of green. The harder groups involve walking and the beginnings of European capital names.
Need the answer quickly? The four groups in NYT Connections #776 are HERBS AND SPICES, SHADES OF GREEN, TRAVEL ON FOOT, and STARTS OF EUROPEAN CAPITALS. The puzzle was published on Saturday, July 26, 2025.
Hints for Connections #776
Try these clues in order, from the gentlest nudge to the most revealing:
- Yellow: Think of ingredients used to season or flavor food.
- Green: These words become shades of green when paired with the color.
- Blue: Each word can describe traveling by walking.
- Purple: Add the beginning of a European capital city to each entry.
Still solving? Look for four culinary seasonings first. Then test whether some apparent color words can form familiar compound names with “green.” The final two groups are designed to create a particularly tempting overlap: TREK and WARS may make you think of space franchises, but they belong to different categories.

NYT Connections #776 answers for July 26, 2025
Yellow: HERBS AND SPICES
ANISE, DILL, MACE, SAGE
All four are culinary herbs or spices used to add flavor. Anise has a licorice-like flavor, dill is common in pickling and savory dishes, mace is a spice related to nutmeg, and sage is an aromatic herb.
Green: SHADES OF GREEN
BOTTLE, HUNTER, KELLY, PEA
Place “green” after each word to get a shade name:
- Bottle green
- Hunter green
- Kelly green
- Pea green
This group is easier to see once you stop treating the entries as standalone color names. The category depends on the familiar phrases they form with green.
Blue: TRAVEL ON FOOT
HIKE, MARCH, TRAMP, TREK
Each word can describe walking or traveling on foot. You can hike a trail, march in an organized group, tramp over a distance, or trek across challenging terrain.
TREK is the main trap here. It may suggest Star Trek, especially when paired mentally with WARS and the idea of Star Wars. That apparent connection is intentional misdirection: WARS belongs in the purple group.
Rank #3
Purple: STARTS OF EUROPEAN CAPITALS
COPE, LUXE, SARA, WARS
These are not complete capital-city names. They are the opening portions of four European capitals:
| Entry | Capital city |
|---|---|
| COPE | Copenhagen |
| LUXE | Luxembourg |
| SARA | Sarajevo |
| WARS | Warsaw |
The clue “Half words” points to this construction. The entries are truncated beginnings rather than abbreviations that stand on their own, making this likely to be the last group many players identify.

Why this puzzle was tricky
The board uses several different kinds of word relationship. The yellow group is a straightforward part-of-speech or subject grouping, while the green group requires recognizing compound shade names. The blue group uses verbs and nouns associated with walking, and the purple group relies on cutting capital-city names short.
Rank #4
The strongest decoy is the pair TREK and WARS. Their connection to Star Trek and Star Wars looks plausible, but a pair is not enough to establish a valid four-word category. Once COPE, LUXE, and SARA suggest the beginnings of capital names, WARS becomes Warsaw, leaving TREK to complete the walking group.
