Spoilers: The four reported groups for puzzle #941 are:
| Category | Words | Connection |
|---|---|---|
| DOPPELGÄNGER | CLONE, DOUBLE, MIRROR, RINGER | Terms for a lookalike or copy. “Dead ringer” is an expression for someone who looks just like another person. |
| PORTION | CONCERN, INTEREST, SHARE, STAKE | Words that can refer to part ownership or involvement, especially in a business. |
| COMMON FLAG SYMBOLS | CRESCENT, CROSS, STAR, STRIPE | Shapes or markings used on flags. |
| PRESSED USING A PRESS | CIDER, GARLIC, TROUSERS, WINE | Apples and grapes are pressed to make cider and wine; garlic is crushed with a press; trousers can be pressed to make a crease. |
Why the vampire connection is a red herring
STAKE, GARLIC, CROSS, and MIRROR may bring vampire stories to mind, but they do not make a category in this puzzle. STAKE belongs with CONCERN, INTEREST, and SHARE in PORTION; GARLIC joins CIDER, TROUSERS, and WINE in the press group; CROSS is a flag symbol; and MIRROR belongs with the lookalike words.
A solving path that avoids the trap
- Lock in the clearest synonym set: CLONE, DOUBLE, MIRROR, and RINGER all point to a copy or lookalike.
- Reconsider the ambiguous business words: CONCERN, INTEREST, SHARE, and STAKE can all describe a portion or stake in an enterprise.
- Scan for flag designs: CRESCENT, CROSS, STAR, and STRIPE are the visual-symbol group.
- Use the remaining connection: CIDER, GARLIC, TROUSERS, and WINE each connect to pressing, though not in exactly the same way.
