Category names and answers
Spoilers below. The starting words were SNOOT, BREAST, FREE, CHEST, BUTTER, SNOB, BACK, EXPERT, BEAK, TRUNK, CRITIC, CASE, CONNOISSEUR, SNOUT, CRATE and HONKER, according to TechRadar’s January 30, 2025 guide to the puzzle.
| Color | Category | Words |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | STORAGE CONTAINERS | CASE, CHEST, CRATE, TRUNK |
| Green | SCHNOZZ | BEAK, HONKER, SNOOT, SNOUT |
| Blue | ONES WITH DISCERNING TASTES | CONNOISSEUR, CRITIC, EXPERT, SNOB |
| Purple | STARTS OF SWIMMING STROKES | BACK, BREAST, BUTTER, FREE |
Why the groupings are tricky
TRUNK can point to either category
TRUNK can mean a storage container or, informally, a nose. In this puzzle it belongs with CASE, CHEST and CRATE in STORAGE CONTAINERS, not with the nose words.

Chicken associations are a distraction
BEAK, BUTTER and BREAST can all evoke chicken, but they do not make a group here. BEAK is part of SCHNOZZ; BUTTER and BREAST start the swimming-stroke names butterfly and breaststroke, alongside BACK and FREE.
SNOB is the awkward fit
The blue category treats a SNOB as someone who claims discerning taste, alongside a CONNOISSEUR, CRITIC and EXPERT. It is a fitting category connection, not a claim that “snob” is always a complimentary description.

How Connections works
TechRadar’s guide describes Connections as a game in which players sort 16 words into four groups sharing a connection. In that guide’s account, players can make up to four mistakes; the color order runs from green, the easiest, through yellow and blue to purple, usually the most difficult. The guide says the game can be played on the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.
