The misleading traffic connection
GO-AHEAD and GREEN LIGHT can suggest traffic, as can TAILGATE and BUMPER-TO-BUMPER. But those four do not make a valid group: GO-AHEAD and GREEN LIGHT are approval, while TAILGATE and BUMPER-TO-BUMPER belong to the purple wordplay category. The overlapping association is the trap; the puzzle requires four entries that share one category.

Connections presents 16 words and asks players to sort them into four groups of four based on a shared theme. The groups are color-coded yellow, green, blue, and purple, with yellow generally the easiest and purple the trickiest. A word may appear to fit more than one theme, but each puzzle has one solution. The daily puzzle releases at midnight in the player’s time zone. Play Connections at The New York Times.
