Progressive hints for Connections #927

Try each clue before moving to the next. The category names and tiles are kept out of this section to preserve the puzzle’s challenge.

  1. Cash lingo.
  2. Food enjoyment, or the act of chewing.
  3. Sea creatures.
  4. Musical vocalizations with an added letter.

Answers for December 24, 2025

Spoilers below: The four categories and all sixteen tiles are listed here.

Color Category Tiles
Yellow SLANG FOR MONEY BACON, BREAD, CHEESE, PAPER
Green MASTICATE BITE, CHAMP, CHEW, MUNCH
Blue FISH CHAR, POLLOCK, SOLE, TANG
Purple WAYS TO VOCALIZE MUSICALLY PLUS A LETTER HUMP, RAPT, SINGE, WHISTLER

Why the purple group is tricky

Remove the final letter from each purple tile to reveal a musical vocalization: HUMP becomes HUM, RAPT becomes RAP, SINGE becomes SING, and WHISTLER becomes WHISTLE. TechRadar contributor Marc McLaren describes spotting RAP inside RAPT and SING inside SINGE, then checking whether the same pattern fitted the remaining words.

How the other groups connect

  • SLANG FOR MONEY: Bacon, bread, cheese, and paper are all slang terms for money.
  • MASTICATE: Bite, champ, chew, and munch are related to chewing.
  • FISH: Char, pollock, sole, and tang are fish.

Solving context

Connections presents sixteen terms to sort into four groups of four. The colored groups indicate different difficulty levels, and words that seem to make an obvious set can be decoys for another relationship. TechRadar’s Johnny Dee called this puzzle easy and reported a perfect score; that is the writer’s personal assessment, not an objective difficulty rating.
