Hints for Connections #436
Try these nudges in order, stopping when you have enough to continue on your own:
- Look for words that can describe a rush of air, actions involving rotation, zodiac animals, and figures from Dr. Seuss titles.
- The categories are hinted at by “A brief breeze, perhaps,” “around and around we go,” “connected to the calendar and the stars,” and “LORAX would fit in here.”
One word may pull you in two directions: WIND can suggest moving air, but it also belongs with words meaning rotate.

The original 16 words were CAT, CRANK, BLOW, POP, LION, GRINCH, WIND, TURTLE, CRAB, REEL, DRAFT, RAM, PUFF, BULL, TURN, and GUST. The answer groups are listed independently by Try Hard Guides and Forbes.
How Connections works
In Connections, players sort 16 words into four groups of four that share a theme. The New York Times Help Center explains that the groups are color-coded from yellow, the easiest, through purple, the trickiest, and that words can seem to fit more than one category. The daily puzzle releases at midnight in the player’s timezone. You can play on the NYT Games website and apps.

Can you replay puzzle #436?
The NYT Help Center says its Connections archive includes puzzles dating back to June 12, 2023 and is available to All Access and Games subscribers. That makes the August 20, 2024 puzzle eligible for replay through the archive, subject to the current access terms. Archived play can affect completion and win statistics, but it does not count toward current or maximum streaks; check the official Connections help page for up-to-date details.
