This guide is for the New York Times Connections puzzle dated October 1, 2024, game #478. Read the progressive hints first; the complete answer groups appear below a spoiler warning.

Try each clue before moving on. They point to the four shared themes without listing the solution words.
- An anxious fixation or agitated state.
- Words you might hear at a gym or from a trainer.
- Something that can make swimming harder.
- Settings used for washing dishes.
Spoilers: the Connections #478 answers
The answers follow. The dated answer guide from Parade, published October 1, 2024, lists these four groups:

Why the categories can be tricky
Connections gives players 16 words to sort into four groups of four. The New York Times Help Center explains that each group shares a connection, with yellow, green, blue, and purple labels; yellow is the easiest and purple the trickiest. Words can plausibly fit more than one category, even though each puzzle has one intended solution. That overlap is why it can help to consider a word’s different meanings before committing to a group.

Playing this puzzle and finding the archive
The New York Times says the daily game is free to play on its platforms and releases at midnight in the player’s timezone. Around that release boundary, a page labeled “today” may show different editions depending on local time. Pairing the date with #478 identifies this guide’s specific puzzle.
For earlier puzzles, the NYT Help Center says the archive is available to All Access and Games subscribers and extends back to June 12, 2023. An account is needed to retain archived progress and history; archived plays can affect statistics but do not affect daily streaks. The Help Center also says completed archive puzzles cannot be replayed. These are current access terms and may change. A New York Times account is recommended for carrying progress across devices.
