Spoiler warning: This page contains hints and the complete solution for NYT Connections puzzle #883, published Monday, November 10, 2025. If you are still solving, start with the broad hints below and reveal the answers one section at a time.

The 16 words are divided into four groups of four. The puzzle’s trickiest entries are likely to be SQUARE, which belongs with debt-related verbs, and the four short Latin prepositions.

NYT Connections #883: the 16 words

Here is the grid for the November 10, 2025 puzzle:

  • TRIANGLE
  • BELL
  • CAME
  • DRUM
  • PAY
  • SUB

NYT Connections #883 answers

Category Answers
Yellow: Percussion instruments BELL, DRUM, RATTLE, TRIANGLE
Green: Satisfy, as debts CLEAR, PAY, SETTLE, SQUARE
Blue: Words in a famous quote by Caesar CAME, I, SAW, CONQUERED
Purple: Latin prepositions AB, PRO, SINE, SUB

How the groups work

Yellow: BELL, DRUM, RATTLE, TRIANGLE

A bell, drum, rattle, and triangle can all make sound when struck or shaken. The triangle is the musical instrument here, while a rattle is a particularly straightforward example of an object whose sound comes from shaking.

Green: CLEAR, PAY, SETTLE, SQUARE

Clear, pay, and settle can all describe resolving a debt. The less obvious answer is square: to “square a debt” or “square an account” is to settle what is owed.

SQUARE is the puzzle’s main semantic red herring. It may initially suggest a shape or geometry, especially because TRIANGLE is also in the grid. Once the debt-related sense is recognized, however, SQUARE fits naturally with CLEAR, PAY, and SETTLE.

Blue: CAME, I, SAW, CONQUERED

These entries evoke the famous Caesar quotation commonly rendered in English as “I came, I saw, I conquered.” The group uses CAME, I, SAW, and CONQUERED.

The words do not form a normal grammatical sentence when simply read as a four-word list, because the quotation repeats “I” and the grid provides only one I. Connections is looking for the recognizable words from the quotation rather than a complete exact transcription of every repeated word.

Purple: AB, PRO, SINE, SUB

AB, PRO, SINE, and SUB are Latin prepositions. Their short forms make this the most specialized category in the puzzle. Broadly, they can be associated with meanings such as “from,” “for” or “in front of,” “without,” and “under,” respectively, although the exact Latin construction and case governed by each preposition matter in formal Latin.

Why this puzzle was difficult

The grid includes several words that encourage familiar but incorrect groupings. TRIANGLE and SQUARE look like they belong together as geometric shapes, but TRIANGLE is needed for the percussion group and SQUARE has the debt-related meaning. The blue category also depends on recognizing a quotation rather than identifying a conventional word class, while the purple category may be inaccessible to solvers who do not recognize common Latin vocabulary.

Connections uses four difficulty colors—yellow, green, blue, and purple—with yellow generally representing the most accessible group and purple the most challenging. Every solution contains four groups of four words.
