This answer guide covers the NYT Connections puzzle released Thursday, December 26, 2024, puzzle #564—not the current day’s game. Read the clues first, then open the answer section when you’re ready to see the groups.
How NYT Connections works
Connections gives players 16 words and asks them to arrange them into four groups of four that share something in common, according to the New York Times Help Center. The groups are marked yellow, green, blue, and purple, from easiest to trickiest. A new puzzle is released at midnight in each player’s timezone.
The challenge is that a word can seem to fit more than one theme. If you’re looking for help with “today’s” puzzle, note that today in this guide means the December 26, 2024 edition.
NYT Connections #564 hints
Try the broad hints first. Each successive set points more directly toward the categories, so stop reading when you have enough to solve the board.

- An estimate of something.
- Sizable plants found in nature.
- Large and/or plentiful.
- Shorthand for certain locations in America.
Color hints
- Yellow: Generally similar.
- Green: Evergreens.
- Blue: A decent portion.
- Purple: Four of the 50.

ELDER, PALM, PINE, SPRUCE. Each is a tree name.
Blue — Sizable, as an amount
HANDSOME, HEALTHY, RESPECTABLE, TIDY. Each can describe a substantial or respectable amount.
Purple — U.S. state abbreviations, per AP style guide
ALA, ARK, MISS, ORE. These are the abbreviations used for Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Oregon in this group; the category concerns abbreviations, not the full state names.
