Why this puzzle was tricky
Several entries invite tempting but incorrect groupings. FLUSH and FULL HOUSE may suggest poker or card terminology, while FLIGHT and STRAIGHT can pull attention toward aviation or sequence-related ideas. Those are useful distractions to recognize, but they should not be treated as evidence of the puzzle makers’ intended construction.

Want more Connections-style puzzles?
For readers who enjoy word-grouping games away from the daily grid, Puzzle Mania!: Wordle, Connections, Spelling Bee, Minis and More! is a physical NYT puzzle book featuring new variations on several New York Times Games, including Connections. It is a related collection—not a reproduction of puzzle #456.
How NYT Connections works
Connections presents 16 words and asks players to divide them into four groups of four. Each group shares a connection, and the categories are color-coded by difficulty: yellow is generally the most accessible, followed by green, blue, and purple. Players can submit a group of four at a time, with mistakes limited by the game’s rules. Access to the game and its archive can depend on the player’s New York Times Games account or subscription arrangements.
The safest solving approach is to identify a strong group, check every word against that idea, and then reconsider the leftovers. Before submitting, look for words that could plausibly fit more than one category—those overlaps are often where the puzzle’s traps are placed.
