NYT Connections puzzle #411 was published Friday, July 26, 2024. Start with the four category hints below if you want a nudge; the complete groups and words are in the spoiler section.

Hints for Connections #411

  • How you might point, for example.
  • Encourage or cheer on.
  • A reason you might not do something.
  • They all sound like other words that are connected.

Answers for July 26, 2024 — spoilers

The four groups of four are:

  • Basic directions: DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, UP.
  • Advocate for: BACK, CHAMPION, ENDORSE, SUPPORT.
  • Drawback: CON, DING, MINUS, STRIKE.
  • Instrument homophones: BASE, LIAR, LOOT, SYMBOL.

The wordplay in the trickiest group

The instrument group uses sound-alikes: BASE sounds like bass, LIAR like lyre, LOOT like lute, and SYMBOL like cymbal. The spellings point away from the instruments, which makes this the most oblique set. This explanation describes how the published category label fits the words.

How Connections works

In the NYT game, players sort 16 words into four groups of four based on a shared theme. The groups are color-coded yellow, green, blue, and purple, from easiest to trickiest; the game has one solution, and the NYT says its editors curate words and categories using the Oxford Dictionary. See the NYT Connections Help Center for current rules and access details.

Can you replay puzzle #411?

The NYT Help Center says its Connections archive includes puzzles dating back to June 12, 2023, for All Access and Games subscribers. Puzzle #411 falls after that start date, but the help page does not confirm that this specific board is currently available. Archive access terms can change. Archive progress and history require a NYT account; archived games affect some statistics but not streaks, and a completed archived puzzle cannot be replayed.

Daily game or archive?

  • Playing the daily puzzle: The Help Center says Connections is free on its listed platforms and releases at midnight in the player’s timezone. Signing in to a NYT account is recommended to retain progress across devices.
  • Replaying a past puzzle: Use the archive if eligible under the current subscription terms; account sign-in is needed to retain archive progress and history.
