Answers for Friday, June 14, 2024
| Color | Category | Answers |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | Writing assignments | ARTICLE, ESSAY, PAPER, REPORT |
| Green | Things that are pink | BUBBLE GUM, CARNATION, ERASER, FLAMINGO |
| Blue | NATO phonetic alphabet | FOXTROT, HOTEL, VICTOR, YANKEE |
| Purple | Associated with #2 | DEPUTY, DEREK JETER, PENCIL, SILVER MEDAL |
How the “associated with #2” group works
The purple group links four different meanings of second: a deputy is a second-in-command; Derek Jeter wore number 2; a pencil can be graded No. 2; and a silver medal is awarded for second place. These are the connections behind the category label, rather than four items from a single subject area.
Why the categories can be tricky
NYT describes Connections as a 16-word puzzle in which players sort the tiles into four groups of four that share a theme. The game has one intended solution, but words can appear to fit more than one category; the Times says editors curate the words and category selection using the Oxford Dictionary. See the NYT Help Center’s Connections guide for the rules.
McLaren characterized this particular puzzle as hard and reported that he made two mistakes. That is his personal result, not a measure of how players generally performed. He also questioned whether ERASER was a convincing example of something pink and whether Derek Jeter would be familiar to an international audience; those are the writer’s reactions, not official NYT commentary.
