“Nutan Varsh Abhinandan” is a greeting used for Gujarati New Year, also known as Nutan Varsh or Bestu Varsh. You can share it alongside “Saal Mubarak” or “Happy New Year.” The sources document these as greetings for the occasion but do not establish a precise word-for-word translation of the phrase.
What does “Nutan Varsh Abhinandan” mean?
“Nutan Varsh Abhinandan” is used as a New Year greeting. You may also see the spelling “Nutan Varsha Abhinandan.” A 2025 report on Gujarati New Year uses “Nutan Varsh Abhinandan,” “Saal Mubarak” and “Happy New Year” for the occasion. These documented variants make the phrase easy to recognize and share, but they do not provide a definitive literal translation.
A September–October 2011 issue of Swaminarayan Bliss records the related greeting “Nava Varsha ka abhinandan” and renders it as “May the New Year be auspicious.” The publication describes people visiting one another’s homes, offering sweets and exchanging greetings; this is a dated account, not a rule followed identically by everyone.
When is Gujarati New Year celebrated?
BAPS identifies Nutan Varsh with Kartak Sud 1, the day after Diwali in its cultural explanation. The date on the Gregorian calendar changes from year to year. In 2025, a DeshGujarat report described that year’s observance as falling on the second day after Diwali. To use a specific date in a card or message, check a calendar for the relevant year rather than assuming the interval is always the same.

How is Nutan Varsh observed?
Customs vary by family and community. BAPS describes prayers and the first aarti for the coming year, along with Annakut, a food offering associated with gratitude. These are cultural and religious context for the observance, not a checklist that every celebrant follows.
The 2011 Swaminarayan Bliss account also describes home visits, sweets and greetings. Because that description is from a particular publication and year, it should be read as one account of the occasion rather than a universal contemporary practice.
