A nuclear explosion releases energy as a fireball, blast wave, intense heat and light, and radiation. Radioactive debris can later fall as fallout, carried by wind in an irregular pattern that may reach beyond areas of severe blast damage. The effects do not have one universal radius: yield, burst altitude, terrain, and weather all matter.

What is a nuclear explosion?

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines a nuclear blast as an explosion caused by nuclear fission and/or fusion. In its Nuclear Blasts: Frequently Asked Questions, published April 10, 2024, the CDC describes it this way: “A nuclear blast, produced by explosion of a nuclear bomb (sometimes called a nuclear detonation), involves the joining or splitting of atoms (called fusion and fission) to produce an intense pulse or wave of heat, light, air pressure, and radiation.”

That energy produces several hazards, not one: a fireball, destructive air pressure and flying debris, intense light and heat, prompt radiation, and delayed radiation from fallout. Their relative reach and severity depend on the detonation and local conditions.

What are the main effects?

The hazards overlap, but differ in how they injure people and how far they may extend.

Effect What it can do When it occurs
Blast and debris Air pressure can damage structures; collapsing buildings and flying debris can cause injury. At and soon after the detonation.
Heat and light Intense heat can cause burns, and the flash can injure eyes. At the detonation.
Prompt radiation Radiation released at the detonation can cause exposure near the blast. Immediately; the hazard generally decreases rapidly with distance.
Fallout radiation Radioactive particles deposited on the ground emit penetrating radiation, creating an exposure hazard. After radioactive debris is carried upward and then settles.

Radiation effects on health depend on the dose, type and route of exposure, and how long the exposure lasts. Some effects may not appear immediately, according to the CDC’s overview of nuclear-blast injuries.

How does fallout form and spread?

Fallout is not simply the mushroom cloud. A fireball can vaporize soil, water, and other material and carry it upward. Radioactive material mixes with this debris; as the material cools, particles form and eventually settle back to the ground. The location and amount of fallout depend on wind and weather, so contamination can vary substantially between places.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Radiation Emergency Medical Management (REMM) explains that the fallout pattern can extend downwind in an irregular, roughly elliptical shape. It may affect places beyond the area with the most severe blast damage. Prompt radiation, by contrast, generally diminishes rapidly with distance from the detonation. Neither pattern can be reduced to a reliable universal radius.

REMM’s discussion of fallout decay says that more than 50% of the energy is given off in the first hour and more than 80% in the first day. These are descriptions of radioactive decay in that discussion, not estimates of an individual’s dose or a signal that it is safe to leave shelter. Follow current official instructions about when to move.

Why do effects vary from one explosion to another?

The affected area depends on the explosion’s yield, the height at which it detonates, the terrain, and the weather. A ground burst can pull surface material into the rising debris, contributing to fallout; wind then shapes where particles travel and settle. Those variables make a single distance misleading when no specific scenario is defined.

Illustrations can help show why different hazards have different footprints, but they must be read as scenario examples. A generalized REMM depiction, based on a hypothetical 10-kiloton ground detonation, shows approximately half a mile of severe shockwave damage, about one mile of severe thermal damage, and potentially lethal fallout radiation up to six miles. These are approximate distances for that scenario, not thresholds that apply to every nuclear explosion.

CDC responder-planning material uses a different measure: it describes a dangerous radiation zone as an area with fallout exposure above 10 roentgens per hour and says areas 10–20 miles downwind may be affected. These are planning descriptions for response, not a prediction for an unspecified detonation.

Is a nuclear bomb the same as a dirty bomb?

No. A nuclear explosion releases enormous energy through fission and/or fusion. A dirty bomb uses conventional explosives to scatter radioactive material; it does not create a nuclear reaction or the destructive force of a nuclear blast. The distinction matters because the source of the explosion and the resulting hazards differ. The CDC explains the difference in its nuclear-blast FAQ.

What should you do during a nuclear-blast emergency?

If an explosion occurs nearby, take immediate cover from the flash, heat, and blast, then get into substantial shelter as quickly as possible. CDC public guidance recommends a basement or another underground area when possible. If you are outside and may have fallout on you, remove contaminated clothing and wash if possible before entering shelter. Follow instructions from local authorities; do not use decay figures or a distance estimate to decide on your own when it is safe to leave.

  1. During the flash and blast: Turn away, close and cover your eyes, drop face down, and stay down until the heat and shock waves have passed.
  2. Get inside: Move to the nearest substantial building, preferably a basement or underground area. Once inside, go to the most protected location available and stay there until authorities provide instructions.
  3. If you were outside: Cover your mouth and nose while moving to shelter. Remove dust from your clothing. Take off clothing that may be contaminated and, if possible, shower and change before entering the protected area. The CDC says removing the outer layer of clothing can remove much of the radioactive material on a person.
  4. Prioritize urgent medical needs: REMM says life-threatening conditions should receive urgent treatment without delay because of contamination concerns, and shelter should not be denied to someone because they may be contaminated.
  5. Stay informed: Use current official emergency instructions for sheltering and any later movement. Fallout’s wind-driven pattern means conditions may differ from one location to another.
