He opens: “The church of Notre-Dame de Paris is still no doubt, a majestic and sublime edifice.”
Where to read Hugo’s description
Read Book III, Chapter I, “Notre-Dame,” in the novel. The English quotation above follows the wording in the Project Gutenberg text; its excerpt does not identify the translator, so it should not be mistaken for Hugo’s original French wording. Read the English text on Project Gutenberg.
The novel was published in Paris in 1831 by C. Gosselin, according to the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF) catalog, which records a third edition in two volumes. The BnF says Hugo wrote most of the novel between September 1830 and January 1831 and provides access to the autograph manuscript through Gallica. How Hugo describes Notre-Dame’s beauty
The façade as a composition
Hugo first directs attention to the front of the cathedral as a coordinated arrangement. The portals and carved details form its base; above them sit the great rose window and gallery, with the twin towers completing the upward sweep. His admiration rests not on one isolated ornament but on the way these parts come together as a whole.

Age as part of the appeal
For Hugo, the cathedral’s weathered appearance is not simply damage to be ignored. He treats the sombre hue time has laid over the building as an addition to its beauty. The effect is historical as well as visual: the façade seems to carry the passage of time in its very surface.
A building between Romanesque and Gothic
Hugo also reads Notre-Dame as a record of architectural change. In his account, it is neither a pure Romanesque nor a pure Gothic monument: pointed arches came to rest on earlier Romanesque supports. The BnF’s curated French excerpt preserves this interpretation, describing the cathedral as an “édifice de la transition.” This is Hugo’s nineteenth-century architectural reading, not a statement of present-day scholarly consensus. Why the chapter matters
The chapter turns close observation into a way of seeing the cathedral: as a deliberately composed façade, a monument whose age contributes to its character, and a structure that bears signs of successive architectural forms. Hugo’s praise is therefore more than a declaration that Notre-Dame is beautiful. It shows how he understands beauty as a combination of design, time and historical layering.
