On August 1, 2012, Markus “Notch” Persson answered questions in a Reddit Ask Me Anything about Minecraft and game development. GamesBeat published a selection of the exchange, edited for clarity; it was not a transcript of the full AMA. The answers offer a snapshot of Persson’s thinking at the time, including his changing view of mods, why he chose Java, and a brief beard joke.
What did Notch think of Minecraft mods?
Persson said he had once felt threatened by mods because they challenged his own vision for the game. He later came to see them as central to Minecraft’s identity, saying, “Mods are a huge reason of what Minecraft is.” The remark captures a change in his perspective: rather than treating modification as a distraction from his plans, he credited it with helping shape the game.
Why did Notch use Java for Minecraft?
Persson said he chose Java because it was one of the languages he knew best when he began work on Minecraft. As GamesBeat reproduced his answer: “I had been working primarily in Actionscript 3 and Java for five years when I started work on Minecraft and chose the language I felt most comfortable with.”
He also valued hot code swapping in debug mode, which let him make rapid tweaks. He acknowledged the trade-offs: Java was not the fastest language, and Minecraft needed ports for other platforms. These are Persson’s explanations from 2012, not current advice about choosing a language for a new project.

Was Minecraft still in line with Notch’s vision?
Asked about the game’s direction, Persson said, “Other than a few minor things, they’re exactly in line with my vision.” He praised work on adventure mode and the separation of client and server, and said he hoped future development would allow more competitive gameplay. PCGamesN also reported his comments about the game’s direction and competitive play. These answers describe his view in 2012; they do not establish Minecraft’s present-day design priorities.
Did Notch want to keep working on Minecraft?
In the 2012 exchange, Persson said he wanted to move on to other things and did not feel an urge to return to coding Minecraft, although he had missed it shortly after leaving. Those remarks are a historical account of how he felt then, not a description of his current work or activities.

What was the joke about the gender of Notch’s beard?
In a light exchange, a reader asked what Persson’s beard was called. He answered, “Steve?” Asked what gender it was, he replied, “Extremely male.” It was a punchline in the Q&A, not a serious biographical claim.

GamesBeat’s August 1, 2012 report said the Reddit thread had 4,468 comments at the time; that is a dated count, not a current total. The outlet selected questions and answers and edited them for clarity, noting that many more exchanges remained in the original thread. The quotations and summaries here reflect that reported selection rather than an independently verified transcript of the full AMA.
