Spoilers for Robert Eggers’s Nosferatu (2024). Ellen sacrifices herself by letting Count Orlok feed on her through the night, keeping him absorbed until sunrise. He fails to escape the light, which kills him; Ellen dies too. Their bodies remain together in the final image, a deliberate tableau that Eggers connects to the historical “Death and the Maiden” motif.
What happens at the end of Nosferatu?
Ellen understands that Orlok’s attention can hold him in place. She offers herself to him, and he feeds through the night, focused on her rather than the approaching dawn. When sunlight arrives, it destroys Orlok. Ellen also dies, and the film closes on their bodies together among her purple flowers.
Her decision is an attempt to stop the plague and terror associated with Orlok’s arrival. It is a deliberate sacrifice, but not a clean victory: the danger ends at the cost of Ellen’s life.
Why does Ellen let Orlok feed on her?
Ellen chooses the encounter because she believes she can keep Orlok occupied until sunrise. Her act gives her a measure of agency after a story in which she has been haunted and controlled, while also exposing the coercion and obsession at the center of their relationship. The choice is hers, but the circumstances are not uncomplicated or romantic.

Is the ending tragic or empowering?
Lily-Rose Depp, who plays Ellen, described the fate as both tragic and empowering. In her reading, Ellen believes she can finally do a good deed and bring light to the world. That interpretation recognizes the force of Ellen’s choice without erasing its cost: she dies, and the ending remains heartbreaking.
What does the final image mean?
Eggers has said the closing pose draws on the “Death and the Maiden” motif, a recurring subject in European art associated with German artist Hans Baldung. He clarified that the tableau is not based on one particular painting or engraving; he wanted to translate the broader motif into the film’s own visual language. Eggers knew early in development that this image would end the film and personally drew the carefully considered pose.

The image holds attraction, death and danger together. Orlok’s closeness to Ellen is not presented as a simple love story: the tableau makes the violence and the cost of his obsession impossible to overlook.
How Eggers’s ending relates to earlier Nosferatu
Eggers’s 2024 film reimagines F. W. Murnau’s 1922 German film. The sacrifice-and-sunrise structure belongs to the earlier Nosferatu ending tradition as well; Eggers gives it a particular emotional emphasis through Ellen’s relationship with Orlok and the closing “Death and the Maiden” composition. The 2024 film stars Lily-Rose Depp as Ellen and Bill Skarsgård as Orlok.
When was the final scene shot?
Although Eggers planned the final image early, he told SYFY WIRE that the ending was filmed about one third of the way into production. The point in the shooting schedule is separate from when he conceived the image.
