A fan reference identifies Richard Armitage as Thornton and Daniela Denby-Ashe as Margaret Hale, and records the BBC broadcast in November and December 2004. PBS’s program page currently says, “There are no episodes currently available.” That is the status shown on that page; it does not establish availability or unavailability on every service or in every country. Check the relevant broadcaster or streaming service for current regional listings.
How to follow credible remake news
- Look for a dated announcement from the BBC, a named rights holder, or a production company involved in the project.
- Check whether the announcement describes a remake of the 2004 television adaptation or a separate adaptation of Gaskell’s novel.
- Distinguish confirmed details—such as cast, format, platform, and production stage—from fan speculation or unverified reports.

Gaskell’s North and South is the source novel for the BBC adaptation, making it a direct option for readers who want the story beyond the screen. Check the edition and regional retailer listing before buying. Historic DVD editions of the adaptation are also documented by fan references, but those listings do not establish current stock or the specifications of a particular copy; verify region coding, subtitles, runtime, and availability with the seller.
