Vince Vaughn plays Joe Scaravella, a Brooklyn-raised New Yorker who turns family loss into an unlikely new beginning: opening a restaurant where grandmothers cook. The film draws on the restaurant’s history, but its women characters are fictionalized rather than documentary portraits.
What is Nonnas about?
In the film, Joe Scaravella works for the MTA before deciding to build a life around food and family memory. After losing loved ones, he uses his mother’s insurance money to open Enoteca Maria on Staten Island, bringing four nonnas into the kitchen. The premise makes the restaurant more than a business: it is a place where grief, cooking and the social life of a neighborhood dining room meet.
Netflix announced the film for release on May 9, 2025, and describes it as both a comedy and a movie based on real life. Stephen Chbosky directed, and Liz Maccie wrote the screenplay. Vaughn stars as Joe; the nonnas are played by Brenda Vaccaro as Antonella, Talia Shire as Teresa, Susan Sarandon as Gia and Lorraine Bracco as Roberta. Joe Manganiello plays Joe’s friend Bruno, and Linda Cardellini plays Olivia. Netflix’s regional title page lists additional cast members including Drea de Matteo, Michael Rispoli and Campbell Scott.
The film’s cooking is part of how it tells its story, not just a backdrop for the plot. Director Chbosky said, “We were interested in what the food revealed about the characters and culture more than just the food itself.” Vaughn described the appeal as “that connection, sharing an experience with people you enjoy.” Netflix’s cast interview and recipes feature connects the food to family memory and inherited traditions.

Is Nonnas based on a true story?
Yes, in the sense that its central idea and founder are rooted in real life; no, if that means the film is a documentary or a scene-by-scene account. Joe Scaravella opened the real Enoteca Maria in 2007 in memory of his mother, Maria, and grandmother, Domenica. Netflix reports that Domenica died in 1999. TIME’s May 9, 2025, profile says the movie’s women are fictionalized characters inspired by real women in Scaravella’s life, so the film should be understood as a dramatization of the restaurant’s inspiration rather than a record of its actual staff or events.
The real restaurant’s story also extends beyond the film’s Italian-grandmother premise. It initially hired Italian grandmothers, then broadened its kitchen to include cooks from other culinary traditions. Netflix reported that by July 2015 women from Japan, Paraguay, Ukraine, Peru, Greece and the Dominican Republic had joined the Staten Island location. That evolution helps explain why the restaurant’s identity is about cultural exchange as well as Italian cooking.

How does the real Enoteca Maria differ from the movie?
| Aspect | Nonnas | Real Enoteca Maria |
|---|---|---|
| People | Four named, fictionalized nonna characters, inspired by women in Scaravella’s life, according to TIME. | Grandmothers who cooked at the restaurant; its roster expanded beyond Italian traditions. Netflix reported international cooks joining by July 2015. |
| Timeline | The film dramatizes Joe’s loss and decision to open the restaurant. | Netflix reports Domenica died in 1999 and Scaravella opened Enoteca Maria in 2007. |
| Purpose | Food and family loss develop the characters and the story. | Scaravella described the restaurant to TIME as “a cultural exchange.” |
These are differences in framing and documented history, not a scene-by-scene accuracy score. TIME described the real restaurant as having 35 seats in its May 2025 report; that figure is a dated description, not confirmation of current capacity. Scaravella also explained the intergenerational meaning of the cooking: “what their mother taught them to make, what their grandmother taught them to make,” comes through when the women cook.
What is the real restaurant’s story?
Enoteca Maria opened on Staten Island in 2007 as Scaravella’s tribute to his mother and grandmother. The idea was to place home cooking and the knowledge passed between generations at the center of a public dining experience. In TIME’s 2025 interview, Scaravella put it this way: “This is not a restaurant,” he said. “It walks like a restaurant, smells like a restaurant, talks like a restaurant, but it’s not a restaurant. It’s a cultural exchange.”

- Ultra-hygienic, non-porous and easy-to-clean. DO NOT add liquid to a hot item, place a hot item on a wet surface, or handle with a wet or cold cloth. These sudden temperature changes may cause the item to break or shatter. Handle hot items with a dry cloth or potholder
That description captures the real-world idea behind Nonnas: food carries memory, but sharing it also creates contact among people with different histories. Netflix’s account of the restaurant’s expanding roster makes clear that the concept eventually reached beyond Italian cooking. The film narrows its focus to a dramatized group of women and Joe’s personal journey.
