Noblemen is a 2019 drama about bullying inside a prestigious boys’ boarding school, where a casting decision in a production of Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice intensifies an already unequal contest. Ali Haji’s expressive performance as Shay gives the film much of its emotional force, though critics have found its exposition and final act less assured.

What is Noblemen about?

Directed by Vandana Kataria, Noblemen follows Shay, a student targeted by classmates Arjun and Baadal in a school governed by entrenched rituals and hierarchy. The official Yoodlee Films synopsis describes a prestigious all-boys boarding school where those customs shape daily life.

The conflict sharpens when Shay and Pia are cast as Bassanio and Portia in the school’s Founders’ Day production of The Merchant of Venice. Baadal wanted Shay’s role, and the casting gives his resentment a concrete focus. Murali, the drama teacher played by Kunal Kapoor, is part of the production at the center of the story.

The Shakespeare play is more than a school backdrop: the production makes status, rivalry and performance part of the same conflict. Google Play characterizes the film as a thematic representation of The Merchant of Venice and describes it as the experience of a 15-year-old facing bullying at boarding school.

Ali Haji’s performance as Shay

Haji is the film’s emotional anchor. Shilajit Mitra, reviewing it for The New Indian Express, called the actor sensitive to the part and praised Kataria’s visual communication of Shay’s personality. That approach makes the character’s watchfulness and vulnerability legible without relying on constant explanation.

Mitra’s reservation is that expository dialogue sometimes spells out what Haji’s performance and the film’s images have already conveyed. It is a tension at the heart of Noblemen: the quieter moments give Shay room to register as a person, while the script can press too hard to explain him.

Bullying, hierarchy and the film’s dramatic choices

The film treats bullying as more than a series of isolated taunts. Its boarding-school setting places Shay within a rigid social order, while the conflict over the lead role makes competition and entitlement visible. The story also engages with enforced ideas of masculinity: the pressure is not only to endure cruelty, but to navigate a school culture that gives some boys more power than others.

Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express rated the film 3 out of 5, praising its unflinching focus on bullying and the conviction of the actors. She was less persuaded by the climax, writing, “You wish that the director had thought of a more believable climax.” Mitra likewise found the third act heavy. Their assessments point to a film whose subject and performances can land more strongly than its final dramatic turn.

Is Noblemen worth watching?

For viewers interested in a serious school drama and a performance-led story, Haji’s work and the film’s use of The Merchant of Venice offer clear reasons to consider it. The caveat is that the storytelling is uneven: exposition can blunt subtle characterization, and the ending has drawn criticism for its weight and plausibility. Whether the film’s emotional impact outweighs those weaknesses will depend on a viewer’s tolerance for a forceful, less convincing final act.

Release, runtime and availability

Google Play identifies Noblemen as a 2019 Indian English-language drama and gives its theatrical release date in India as 28 June 2019. Its listing currently marks the film unavailable; that status applies to the Google Play listing and does not establish that it is unavailable everywhere. Google Play lists a 121-minute runtime, while Rotten Tomatoes lists 1 hour 49 minutes, so the available listings do not agree on duration.

Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 100% Tomatometer from six reviews and a 33% Popcornmeter from fewer than 50 ratings when retrieved in 2026. Those small, changeable samples are a snapshot, not a dependable measure of broad audience consensus.
