Noah Hathaway, who played Atreyu in the 1984 film The NeverEnding Story, has recalled a serious horseback accident before filming and hazardous incidents during production. But reports that mention health problems continuing into adulthood do not establish a specific condition or how he is doing today.
What happened to Noah Hathaway before filming?
In a 2024 report by Meristation/AS, Hathaway recalled being injured in a horseback incident during training before the film was shot. He said he was hospitalized in Germany for two months, then returned to make the movie. These details come from his retrospective account as relayed by the publication, not from medical records or an independent investigation. Meristation/AS, August 22, 2024
What dangers did he describe on set?
The same report recounts Hathaway’s memories of repeated falls, an incident involving the Gmork animatronic, and passing out during the Swamps of Sadness sequence. The account concerns the mud scene and Hathaway himself; it is separate from Artax’s fictional fate in the story. Meristation/AS
Did a horse die during the Swamps of Sadness scene?
Noah Hathaway said neither of the horses used for the sequence suffered serious injury or died, according to Meristation/AS. That reported account does not support treating the persistent horse-death rumor as fact. The scene’s fictional loss of Artax should not be confused with what Hathaway said happened to the horses during filming.

Does Hathaway still suffer from those accidents?
Yahoo Entertainment’s interview-based report says Hathaway experienced health issues that continued into adulthood, but it does not specify a diagnosis, symptoms, severity, or his present-day health. The available reporting therefore supports saying that he has spoken about lasting health issues; it does not establish that he currently suffers from a particular condition or that a specific present-day problem was caused by the film’s production. In that report, Hathaway joked, “I joke about how they were always trying to kill me on that movie.” It is a retrospective characterization, not a medical assessment or an independent finding about production safety.

What the accounts can—and cannot—establish
Hathaway’s recollections, as relayed in later entertainment reporting, describe a serious pre-filming injury and hazardous moments on set. The reports are useful accounts of what he says happened, but they are not medical documentation or a production safety investigation. Remind Magazine’s 40th-anniversary interview provides context about the film and the Artax scene, but does not establish Hathaway’s current medical status. Remind Magazine
