Lionsgate’s announcement gives the franchise’s next film a firm date, while a production tracker later reported that the movie had reached post-production.
When does Noah Centineo’s Rambo movie come out?
Lionsgate announced a North American release date of June 4, 2027, for John Rambo, according to Screen Daily’s May 28, 2026 report. That is the confirmed date for North America; an international release schedule has not been established in the available announcements.
Is John Rambo a prequel?
Yes. The film is described as an origin story set before the events of First Blood, the 1982 film that introduced Rambo on screen. Noah Centineo plays a younger John Rambo. The announced title is John Rambo, rather than a numbered sequel.
Who is making the film?
- Lead: Noah Centineo as John Rambo.
- Director: Jalmari Helander.
- Screenplay: Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani.
- Producers named by Screen Daily: Kevin King Templeton, Les Weldon, Jonathan Yunger, Angela Russo-Otstot and Michael Disco.
- Executive producer: Sylvester Stallone is among the executive producers.
Helander has spoken about his connection to the franchise: “When I was eleven, I saw ‘First Blood’ for the first time, and it changed my life,” he said, as quoted by TheWrap’s May 28, 2026 report. The remark is his personal recollection of seeing the original film.

How it connects to the original Rambo story
John Rambo is positioned as a story about the character before First Blood, rather than a continuation of the events in the earlier films. David Morrell’s novel First Blood can offer optional background on the character and the source material for the 1982 film, but the available reports do not say that the novel is the screenplay source for this prequel.
