New South Wales Police closed their investigation into a reported altercation involving Taylor Swift’s father, Scott Swift, and photographer Ben McDonald without further action. Police said no offences were detected. That outcome is not a court ruling on the conflicting accounts of what happened.
What police decided
The Associated Press reported on 28 March 2024 that NSW Police had concluded the investigation with no charges. The force’s statement was: “No offences were detected, and the investigation was concluded with no further police action required.” Associated Press
Police did not announce a court proceeding or a judicial finding about the incident. The decision means the investigation ended without further police action; it does not establish which account of the encounter was accurate.
What was reported at Neutral Bay Wharf
The reported incident took place at about 2:30am on Tuesday, 27 February 2024, at Neutral Bay Wharf in Sydney, after Taylor Swift’s final Sydney Eras Tour show. Photographer Ben McDonald said he had been photographing Swift and her entourage after they came ashore from a yacht. ABC reported that police initially received a report alleging that a 71-year-old man assaulted a 51-year-old man; police said the reporting man did not require medical treatment. ABC News

The two publicly reported accounts
McDonald’s allegation
McDonald alleged that a security guard pushed an umbrella into his face and camera, and that Scott Swift then punched him. This is the photographer’s account of the encounter, not a finding of fact by police or a court. ABC News
Swift’s representative’s response
A spokesperson for Taylor Swift gave a different account, saying: “Two individuals were aggressively pushing their way towards Taylor, grabbing at her security personnel, and threatening to throw a female staff member into the water.” ABC did not identify the spokesperson by name. ABC News

These accounts conflict. Because police ended the investigation without further action and the matter was not resolved in court, neither should be presented as an established account of the incident.

The reported encounter followed Swift’s fourth sold-out Sydney show at Accor Stadium. It occurred during the Australian leg of the Eras Tour. The Associated Press reported that more than 600,000 fans attended seven Australian stadium concerts across that tour leg; that figure is for Australia overall, not Sydney alone.
