News and Rolling Stone reported that Britney Spears’s July 2025 Instagram caption about adopting a baby girl was a joke. TMZ separately reported, citing sources it described as having direct knowledge, that she had not adopted a child.
What did Britney Spears post?
On July 13, 2025, Spears shared a dance video on Instagram with a caption saying she had adopted a “beautiful baby girl” named Lennon London Spears. Rolling Stone reproduced the caption as: “I want to let you guys know I adopted a beautiful baby girl 😉😉😉 !!! Her name is Lennon London Spears 🤪🤪🤪 !!!”
The name and adoption wording came from the caption; they do not establish that a child by that name exists. E! News and Rolling Stone described the post as playful, pointing to its tone and emojis.
What did news outlets report?
- E! News: Reported on July 14, 2025, that Spears had not adopted a daughter and characterized the caption as a joke. Read E! News.
- Rolling Stone Australia: Reported on July 15, 2025, that Spears had not added a child to her family and treated the post as a joke. Read Rolling Stone.
- TMZ: Reported on July 14, 2025, citing sources it described as having direct knowledge, that Spears had not adopted a child or a dog and was “just messing with people.” Those sources also said a baby carrier seen in a video was used to transport baby dolls. That explanation is attributed to unnamed sources, not to a named representative or direct statement from Spears. Read TMZ’s report.
Why did the adoption claim spread?
The claim came from the literal wording of Spears’s caption. Read without its playful tone, “I adopted a beautiful baby girl” could sound like a real announcement; the outlets reporting on it interpreted the post as a joke rather than confirmation of an adoption.

The coverage cited here does not establish an independently verified search of adoption records, nor does it quote a named Spears representative directly addressing the claim. The conclusion is therefore best stated as what these outlets reported: Spears did not adopt a child, and the Instagram caption was playful.
