2019: A meeting in Florida
The Associated Press reported that Dobrev and White met at a Tony Robbins event in Florida in 2019. Both gave presentations, then went out to eat together afterward. The AP’s account is the source for that meeting detail.
Glamour’s retrospective timeline says Dobrev later shared that the pair spent New Year’s Eve together on December 31, 2019. That detail comes from secondary timeline reporting, rather than the AP account of their first meeting. Glamour’s timeline recounts it.
When the relationship became public
February–March 2020: Early clues
Entertainment coverage dated dating rumors to late February 2020, after Dobrev and White posted from the same location in South Africa while she was filming. Glamour also reports that they were later seen biking together in Malibu. These were public clues reported by entertainment outlets, not a direct confirmation from the couple.

April–May 2020: Dating reports and the haircut post
Glamour says an April 18 video of Dobrev cleaning groceries showed White nearby, and a dating report appeared that day. On May 28, Dobrev posted a video of herself cutting White’s hair. The AP describes the haircut image as one of their first posts and places their public debut in 2020. The post became a memorable early glimpse of the relationship, but neither early sighting nor post establishes a more exact date when they began dating.
Their relationship from 2020 to 2023
Over the next several years, Dobrev and White shared occasional travel posts and supported each other’s careers, according to the AP. Glamour’s timeline also reports that they quarantined together and traveled to Tulum in 2020.

Dobrev supported White’s effort to qualify for his fifth and final Olympics in 2022. The following year, White attended the Los Angeles premiere of Dobrev’s film The Out-Laws. Those public moments offered glimpses of their life together, while leaving much of the relationship private.
October 2024: White proposed
White proposed at The Golden Swan, a New York restaurant, the weekend before the AP reported the engagement in October 2024. His publicist, Jennifer Peros, confirmed the engagement to the AP. White presented Dobrev with a five-carat diamond ring and announced the news on Instagram with the words, “She said YES.”
According to the AP, Peros arranged a dinner invitation involving Anna Wintour as a pretext to get Dobrev to the restaurant. The engagement was the couple’s most prominent public commitment, but it did not lead to a wedding announcement before their separation.
September 2025: The engagement ended
The AP reported that People had seen Dobrev and White together as recently as August 31, 2025. The following week, Dobrev appeared without her engagement ring at the Toronto International Film Festival. On September 12, the AP reported that the engagement had ended and that the couple had separated after five years.
The account that the decision was mutual came from an unnamed person close to the couple, as reported by the AP. Glamour’s September 11 account also attributed to a source the description of a decision made with love and mutual respect. Neither account was a direct statement from Dobrev or White, so the private circumstances of the breakup are not established by those reports.

In his first public comments on the broken engagement, White told the AP: “It was a huge change in my life. It’s almost six years with somebody. I wish her the best. It’s one of those things where you’re planning on forever with somebody and everything needs to fit right.”

White also said people had invented reasons for the split, “none of which have been true.” He did not explain why the relationship ended. The cause of the breakup remains private; speculation should not be treated as fact.
