The claim became a viral media experiment—but a later reversal made the complete timeline and weight-loss story impossible to verify independently.
What happened in the “Two Steps Ahead” video?
On September 6, 2024, Perry appeared substantially thinner than in the videos his audience had been seeing. Contemporary coverage by Philstar and other outlets reported his claim that the change represented a loss of about 250 pounds over two years.
He described the project as “the greatest social experiment of my entire life.” The premise, as he presented it, was that his public character continued in familiar mukbang videos while his real body and private life changed away from the audience.
Newshouse reported that his channel had about 4.5 million subscribers at the time. That was a contemporaneous figure, not a permanent or current subscriber count.

Did he upload old videos while losing weight?
Yes. Perry said the channel’s apparent continuity was created with scheduled or prerecorded uploads. Viewers therefore believed they were watching the creator’s current eating videos even though, according to his account, the footage had been recorded earlier.
This explanation accounts for how a major physical change could remain hidden from regular viewers. Upload dates show when a video appeared, not necessarily when it was filmed. They do not, by themselves, prove the amount of weight lost or establish the exact dates of Perry’s private changes.
What did Perry mean by “social experiment”?
His wording focused on audience behavior rather than on a clinical weight-loss study. He portrayed viewers as drawn to conflict, spectacle and a recurring emotional persona. A UNSW analysis reproduced this statement from the reveal:
“Today I woke up from a very long dream […] having lost 250 pounds off my body, yet just yesterday people were calling me fat and sick and boring and irrelevant. People are the most messed up creatures on the entire planet and yet I’ve still managed to stay two steps ahead of everyone. The joke’s on you.”

- Great design for all vegans and vegetarians as well as animal rights activists who advocate a sustainable diet. Animal husbandry produces too much C02, accelerating climate change. A meatless diet protects the environment and lives healthily.
- Hardcover journal with 240 line-ruled pages (120 sheets)
- Built-in elastic closure and ribbon bookmark
- Includes an expandable inner storage pocket and a pen holder
The same analysis quoted an earlier explanation of his performance strategy: “They (viewers) like when I’m upset, they like when I’m crying, they like when I’m hyper.” These are Perry’s descriptions of his audience and content—not independent evidence that a controlled experiment was conducted.
When did he say the weight loss started?
Perry did not publish a clinician-verified start date. His statement that the change took place over about two years would place the beginning roughly around 2022 if counted back from the September 2024 reveal. That is an estimate based on his claim, not a documented timeline.

Why is the story disputed?
On September 19, 2024, Know Your Meme documented a follow-up in which Perry said the weight-gain narrative had itself been acted out. He questioned who would conduct a social experiment by gaining 250 pounds over five years. This later statement changes how the earlier videos can be interpreted: the public record contains contradictory creator explanations rather than one settled account.
What is established—and what remains unverified?
| Question | What Perry or contemporaneous coverage reported | What has not been independently established |
|---|---|---|
| How much weight was lost? | Perry claimed about 250 pounds, approximately 110–114 kilograms. | An independent measurement, medical record or verified before-and-after weight series. |
| How long did it take? | He described the change as occurring over about two years. | A dated, documented weight trajectory confirming that duration. |
| How was it concealed? | He said prerecorded or scheduled mukbang videos kept the audience from seeing the process. | Independent confirmation of every upload’s filming date. |
| What method produced the change? | No specific method was documented in the cited coverage. | A verified diet, exercise plan, medication, procedure or clinical supervision. |
| Was the entire story staged? | The September 19 follow-up said the weight-gain narrative had also been acted out. | A definitive account reconciling the two sets of statements. |
How should viewers interpret the health claims?
The videos demonstrate a media strategy, not a reproducible medical plan. Neither the claimed amount nor its cause can be assessed safely without records from qualified clinicians and a documented history. The absence of a disclosed protocol means viewers cannot infer that any particular diet, drug, surgery or exercise routine caused the change.

What the episode says about creator-audience dynamics
The stunt worked because viewers had an established expectation of continuity: the same character, the same format and the same apparent present tense. By substituting archived footage, Perry turned that expectation into the subject of the reveal. The later reversal also shows the risk of treating a creator’s dramatic explanation as a complete factual record. In this case, the strongest defensible conclusion is that Perry successfully engineered a surprise and framed it as commentary on online spectatorship; the exact physical history remains unsettled.
