John Larroquette played Maltz, a Klingon officer in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. Decades later, his Night Court character Dan Fielding revisited the role in the 2024 episode “Wrath of Comic-Con,” dressing as a Klingon and using Maltz’s name. It is a sitcom callback, not a return to the Star Trek series.
Who was Larroquette’s Klingon in Star Trek III?
In the 1984 film Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Larroquette played Maltz, a Klingon officer serving under Commander Kruge. The film’s Bird of Prey crew is part of the story surrounding the Genesis planet and the search for Spock. The film credit is also listed on NBC’s Dan Fielding character page.
The available screenplay depicts Maltz operating the ship’s transporter. Later, after Kirk and the Enterprise crew take control of the Bird of Prey, Kirk tells Maltz to help the crew and takes him along. The archived screenplay may differ from the released film, so it is best treated as a guide to the character’s role rather than a definitive transcript.
How did Night Court bring Maltz back?
In “Wrath of Comic-Con,” Dan Fielding wears Klingon attire as a disguise at Comic-Con and calls himself Maltz. That name makes the joke specific: Dan is not simply dressed as a generic Klingon; Larroquette’s sitcom character is invoking the actor’s earlier film role. A contemporaneous recap describes the episode’s Comic-Con disguise. (Nerds That Geek recap.)
