Who does Vanessa Kirby play?
Kirby plays Lynette, the film’s central character. Netflix’s synopsis sets her urgent goal: she needs to raise $25,000 before eviction. Her all-night search grows increasingly dangerous as the story follows her effort to keep her family housed.
What is the story behind the cast?
Night Always Comes is a drama tagged by Netflix as a thriller and a movie based on a book. Director Benjamin Caron framed its central question as, “What does it mean to fight for your place in the world?” Netflix’s July 17, 2025 feature also quotes Caron describing the film’s interest in “survival and sacrifice” and “quiet heroism.”

Caron said the adaptation opens up the novel’s setting by making Portland part of the film’s character and visual approach: “the contrast between the city’s foreclosed buildings and the gentrified neighborhoods” reflects Lynette’s personal crisis. Netflix reports that the film was shot in Portland, Oregon; this is the director’s stated framing, not a claim about current housing conditions across the city.
Is Night Always Comes based on a book?
Yes. The film adapts Willy Vlautin’s 2021 novel The Night Always Comes. The novel is the source material, rather than a movie tie-in edition; the film and book are separate versions of the story.

Netflix’s title page spells Zack Gottsagen’s name as “Zachary Gottsagen,” while Tudum uses “Zack Gottsagen.” Tudum’s photo caption calls Michael Kelly “Michael J. Kelly,” whereas the cast listing uses “Michael Kelly”; the table follows the latter. Netflix captions also identify Sean Martini as Drew, but the reviewed cast listing does not establish a character mapping for him, so Drew is not included among the principal role pairings above.
