Across recording sessions, early live shows and later returns to touring, Olsson has remained closely tied to John’s music. In an interview, he recalls how the songs won him over—and explains why his drumming starts with the lyrics and piano rather than an automatic solo.
How Nigel Olsson joined Elton John’s musical world
Olsson was already an experienced drummer before working with John. Elton John’s official profile notes that he had played with Plastic Penny, briefly with Uriah Heep and with the Spencer Davis Group. His first appearance on a John record came in 1969, playing drums on “Lady, What’s Tomorrow?” from Empty Sky, as the official profile and a 2017 official article record.
In the interview, Olsson remembers rehearsing with John and bassist Dee Murray and realizing quickly that he wanted to play this music. “Within the first eight bars of the first song that we played together, I knew that this was the music that I wanted to be playing.” He describes being drawn to its feeling and originality—not just the chance to join a prominent act. The interview is hosted by Elton John Italy, whose page identifies it as a Rolling Stone interview; the original publisher page and interview date have not been independently confirmed here.
What Olsson says about his drumming
Olsson’s own description puts the song ahead of display. “I play to the lyrics and the low-end of the piano,” he says. That is his account of how he approaches the music, not an independent technical evaluation of his playing.

A long association, with separate touring periods
John’s official profile shows Olsson’s connection with the live band across multiple periods, rather than one uninterrupted run. Its tour listings include 1970–71, 1972–73, 1973–74, 1980, 1982–83 and 1984, followed by listings for 2000, 2001–09, 2009–11 and 2011–12. The page also displays a listing beginning “2012–Present”; that wording belongs to the profile and should not be read as confirmation of a current tour schedule.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the “50 years” phrase needs context
The title is best understood as a rounded reflection on the length of Olsson’s relationship with John’s music, not as a precise employment timeline. The official biography’s separated tour periods make that distinction clear. The interview’s references to preparing for the Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour—including a planned September 8 start in Allentown—are historical comments from that interview, not current schedule information.
