Calling it a “sleeper hit” is a recommendation, not a proven claim about viewership: the available ratings are favorable but too limited to show that the series broke out with a broad audience.
What is NieR:Automata Ver1.1a about?
NieR:Automata Ver1.1a is a television adaptation of the action RPG NieR:Automata. In its far-future setting, humanity has retreated to the moon, while YoRHa android soldiers 2B and 9S are sent to Earth to fight machine lifeforms. The anime’s official introduction places the story in the year 11,945 and presents it as a record of the androids’ conflict and wishes. Aniplex’s series description and the official anime introduction establish the adaptation and premise.
Why call it a sleeper hit—and what do the ratings show?
The case for recommending the series is stronger than the case for calling it a documented audience breakout. The term “sleeper hit” works here as an editorial judgment about a potentially overlooked anime, not as a verified measure of streaming reach, sales or cultural impact.
- Rotten Tomatoes: Its Season 1 page showed an 85% Tomatometer score from just two critic reviews when accessed in 2026. That is a very small critic sample, not a stable measure of consensus. The page also had fewer than 50 audience ratings, which cannot establish how many people watched the series. Rotten Tomatoes’ Season 1 page includes individual responses such as Polygon’s discussion of the adaptation’s departures from the game and IGN’s 8/10 review; those are particular critical views, not universal verdicts.
- AniList: The title page showed a 73% average score when accessed in 2026. AniList also ranked it #74 highest rated and #34 most popular among its 2023 titles. Those rankings describe its standing on that platform, not industry-wide viewership or popularity. See the AniList title page.
No reliable audience-reach, viewership or sales figures establish whether the anime was commercially or culturally a sleeper hit. The available ratings make it reasonable to call it a promising pick for the right viewer, but not a proven mass-audience success.

Is the anime worth watching if you haven’t played the game?
Yes, if you are interested in its premise and style; the game is not a prerequisite. The anime introduces its own story through 2B, 9S and their war against the machines. Playing first may give fans additional context and a chance to compare the adaptation, but viewers can approach the series as an anime in its own right.
The formats also tell stories differently. The game uses interactive play, while the series communicates through animation, direction and a fixed screen narrative. The anime’s changes from its source are part of the adaptation rather than evidence that a viewer must know the game beforehand. If you want to experience the interactive version after watching, look for the original NieR:Automata game on a platform and in an edition that suits you.
