Why she was absent from the ceremony
Kidman’s written statement, read at the ceremony by Reijn, said she learned shortly after arriving in Venice that her mother had died. Kidman wrote that she was in shock and needed to go to her family. ABC News reported her statement on September 8, 2024.
Who accepted the award for Kidman
Reijn, the director of Babygirl, accepted the Coppa Volpi on Kidman’s behalf and read her written message. Kidman did not miss out on the award; she missed the opportunity to accept it in person. What Kidman said in her statement
“I arrived in Venice and found out shortly after that my beautiful, brave mother, Janelle Ann Kidman has just passed,” Kidman wrote.
“I am in shock and I have to go to my family but this award is for her.”
“She shaped me, she guided me and she made me.”
