The Los Angeles Times reported on December 21, 2025, citing two people with knowledge of the criminal investigation, that Nick Reiner had been prescribed medication for schizophrenia before the deaths of his parents, Rob and Michele Singer Reiner. The report does not establish a full diagnosis or treatment history, and it does not show that medication or a mental-health condition caused the deaths.
What the report says—and what it does not
The Los Angeles Times report published December 21, 2025 attributed the prescription information to two people with knowledge of the investigation. It is a report based on anonymous sources, not a publicly released medical record or direct confirmation from the Reiner family.
The precise claim is that Reiner had been prescribed medication for schizophrenia at some point before his parents’ deaths. That wording does not establish when a prescription was made, whether he took medication, what medication was involved, how it affected him, or whether he received a particular diagnosis. The Los Angeles Times revisited the case and the defense on December 24, 2025, while again describing the medication information as coming from sources familiar with the investigation; it did not publish a medical record or reach a causal conclusion.
Why the distinction matters in a pending criminal case
A prescription report is not evidence that a mental-health condition caused a crime. The available reporting does not establish a connection between the reported medication or schizophrenia treatment and the deaths. Treating the two as linked would go beyond what the sources say and risk presenting an unsupported conclusion as fact.

The criminal allegations also remain allegations. In an update published September 15, 2026, the Associated Press reported that prosecutors had decided not to seek the death penalty. AP described life without parole as the maximum sentence if Reiner is convicted; that is a possible sentence, not a finding of guilt.
Separate biographical context: Being Charlie
Nick Reiner and his father co-wrote the 2015 film Being Charlie, which was partly based on Nick’s addiction struggles, according to the Associated Press. That collaboration is separate biographical context. It does not corroborate the schizophrenia-medication report or explain the criminal allegations.
