That supports calling the film a modern take on a classic comic mechanism; the available reporting does not establish that a broader, decades-old movie trend has returned.
What is the “decades-old movie trend”?
The phrase points most plausibly to the comedy of errors: characters misunderstand one another, then make choices that compound the confusion. In I Don’t Understand You, the misunderstanding is rooted in travel and language, but the consequences turn macabre. August Night Pictures described the film as a dark comedy in which communication problems lead to violence, while the Los Angeles Times’ June 6, 2025 report describes its shift from lighthearted comedy to darker humor.
Those descriptions support the film’s genre and premise, not a documented industry-wide revival. The two accounts do not identify a cycle of older films, date such a trend, or show that it has returned. So the trend language works as a loose description of the film’s old-fashioned mechanism, rather than a verified claim about movie history.
What is I Don’t Understand You about?
Kroll and Rannells play Dom and Cole, a couple hoping to adopt who travel to Italy for an anniversary trip. Car trouble and difficulty communicating with local residents set off a chain of increasingly chaotic events. The film’s central joke—and source of danger—is that the couple interpret what they cannot understand as hostility.

As David Joseph Craig, one of the writer-directors, put it to the Los Angeles Times, “Our monster is their own perception of hostility.” The line captures the film’s blend of miscommunication and dark comedy: the danger grows from the characters’ assumptions as much as from the situation around them.
How the filmmakers’ real experiences shaped the story
Writer-directors Brian Crano and David Joseph Craig said the screenplay drew on their adoption journey and a real anniversary trip in Italy. They had faced adoption difficulties; on the trip, their car became stuck in a ditch during heavy rain, and a local family helped them despite the language barrier. Their friend Joel Edgerton encouraged them to write about the experience.

The film takes that personal starting point into fictional, macabre territory. Craig described writing it while exhausted with a newborn as “kind of our mutual catharsis during that time.” Crano said they did not want to make “a polemical, flag-wavy, tear-jerky adoption movie.” Instead, adoption hopes and travel anxiety provide the emotional background for an increasingly extreme comedy.
