An NHK Enterprises catalog does list a production about the shrine during the U.S. occupation, but it has not been confirmed as the program described in the headline. The claim also risks being confused with a separate film, Li Ying’s Yasukuni, whose Japanese screening controversy was reported in 2008.
What can be verified about the NHK program?
NHK Enterprises’ catalog lists an NHK Special production titled “Yasukuni Shrine: Unknown Struggles Under Occupation”. That catalog entry confirms a program with that title exists in the catalog; it does not establish that it is the documentary described in the claim, when or whether it aired, or what it said about the shrine.
An October 10–12, 2026 Reddit thread discusses a purported NHK documentary, but it is user-generated discussion rather than a broadcast record or independent news report. It cannot establish the program’s contents or represent Japanese viewers as a whole. The available evidence also provides no verified audience figures, transcript, or direct statement from the Chinese expert named in the claim. No verbatim quotation from that expert has been located.
Is this the same as Li Ying’s film Yasukuni?
No evidence links the NHK catalog entry to the earlier feature film Yasukuni, directed by Chinese filmmaker Li Ying. The Japan Times reported in April 2008 that theaters in Tokyo and Osaka canceled screenings amid fears of right-wing protests; some politicians criticized the film as anti-Japan. That episode concerned Li Ying’s film and does not verify a backlash to an NHK documentary or establish a current reaction among Japanese viewers. A scholarly account likewise discusses the 2007 film and the controversy around its 2008 release.

Why is Yasukuni Shrine politically controversial?
Yasukuni is a religious shrine and a memorial to people who died in service of Japan. The controversy is shaped in part by the shrine’s commemoration of people convicted of war crimes after World War II and by disagreements over how Japan remembers its wartime actions. The Associated Press reported on August 14, 2026, that more than 2.4 million people are honored there, including 14 convicted World War II war criminals. Those figures are AP’s reporting, not a newly verified count in this article.
AP also reported that China and South Korea view visits to the shrine by Japanese political figures as signs that Japan has not shown sufficient remorse for its wartime aggression. The issue therefore concerns both the shrine’s religious and memorial role and the meaning that political acts there carry in debates over history and remembrance.

A scholarly account notes that Yasukuni changed from a State Shinto institution to a private religious institution during the U.S. occupation. That institutional change is relevant context, but it does not resolve the competing historical interpretations attached to the shrine.

The sources available here do not substantiate broad backlash among Japanese viewers, identify the Chinese expert, or verify the claim that a documentary exposed historical misconceptions among right-wing forces. The Reddit discussion shows that some users discussed a purported program and expressed different opinions; it is not evidence of a representative public response. Without a confirmed program, transcript, or independent reporting on reactions, the headline’s account of the documentary and its impact remains unverified.

Readers looking to confirm the claim should distinguish a catalog listing from proof of an airing, and online discussion from reporting about audience reaction. The key missing confirmation is independent, program-specific evidence that identifies the broadcast and documents the statements and response attributed to it.
