If you want to stream a recording to YouTube without operating an NGINX RTMP server, use a hosted prerecorded-video service such as StreamNeo, Castr, StreamYard or Restream. These services handle file playout in the cloud; an encoder connected to YouTube’s ingest endpoint is the alternative when you want to keep a self-managed pipeline. Choose based on whether you need continuous looping, scheduled one-off events, studio features or control over the ingest protocol.
Which NGINX RTMP alternative fits your workflow?
NGINX RTMP is a self-managed server approach. A hosted prerecorded-video service instead takes an uploaded recording or playlist and sends it to YouTube as a live broadcast. For a continuing YouTube channel, StreamNeo is the first option to consider: it keeps uploaded videos live from the cloud, at any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and the first day is free.
| Option | Documented workflow | Best fit | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Upload a recording or create a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the cloud loops the video. | A YouTube channel that needs continuous prerecorded playout without a home computer or encoder left running. | Storage is 10 GB per slot, pooled across active slots; confirm your total file storage needs. |
| Castr | Upload MP4 files and schedule or loop a cloud broadcast; its product page describes sending to YouTube and other destinations without a local encoder. | Scheduled or looping broadcasts, particularly if you need multiple destinations. | Current plan limits for storage, playlist size, concurrent streams, duration, destinations and looping. Infinite looping is described for Premium and higher. |
| StreamYard | Upload or select a recording, schedule destinations and a start time, and let the event start and end automatically. | A scheduled recording where its automatic start/end workflow is more important than studio overlays during playback. | MP4/H.264, plan-dependent duration, file size and simultaneous scheduled streams, resolution, announcement timing and archive behavior. |
| Restream Upload & Stream | Upload or import a recording, schedule it as a live event, and stream a single video or playlist; its help article describes looping up to 10 times. | A scheduled event with playlist playback or real-time chat. | Current plan availability, file and playlist constraints, destination availability and whether its event model fits the use case. |
| Encoder to YouTube ingest | Send an encoder output to a YouTube ingestion endpoint using a supported protocol. | Operators who want to retain an encoder-based, self-managed workflow. | Encoder configuration, protocol compatibility, latency needs and stream-key handling. |
Hosted vendors document their own workflows; those descriptions do not establish comparative uptime or independent reliability. Plans and entitlements can change, so check each vendor’s current limits before committing.
When a hosted service is better than running NGINX RTMP
A hosted service is the more direct replacement when the main job is to keep a recording playing on YouTube without maintaining a server or leaving a local encoder online. The service handles scheduled file playout in its cloud. This reduces the work of keeping your own process and machine available, but means you depend on that service’s upload constraints, plan limits and event controls.

Castr for scheduled and looping broadcasts
Castr documents MP4 uploads, scheduled one-time broadcasts and looping broadcasts, with cloud playback that does not require a local encoder. Its feature page describes multiple destinations. Its YouTube connection instructions offer an API connection or manual entry of YouTube’s streaming server and key. With the manual key method, Castr’s instructions say to edit the stream description in YouTube’s dashboard. Verify current plan entitlements, especially if you need infinite looping.
StreamYard for a scheduled recording
StreamYard’s automatic prerecorded workflow starts at the selected time and ends when the video finishes. Its help documentation specifies MP4 with H.264 video, paid-plan output up to 1080p, and a maximum upload bitrate of 10 Mbps; duration, file size and the number of simultaneously scheduled streams depend on plan. Automatic prerecorded mode does not support studio overlays or displaying comments on-stream, and the stream is no longer automatically saved to the StreamYard library. If you need an intro, outro or overlays, StreamYard recommends a regular studio broadcast in which you start the broadcast and play the video as long-form media.

Restream Upload & Stream for scheduled events and playlists
Restream’s help article describes uploading a recording to its storage or importing it through Descript, Google Drive or Dropbox. You can schedule the video as a live event, play one video or a playlist, and loop a scheduled video up to ten times. The cited help article does not establish every current plan tier or destination limit, so confirm those details with Restream before choosing it.
Protocol choices when you keep an encoder workflow
YouTube supports RTMP, RTMPS, HLS and DASH for third-party ingestion. YouTube’s protocol comparison, last updated 2026-09-14 UTC, describes RTMP and RTMPS as suitable for normal, low or ultra-low latency. RTMPS encrypts the ingest connection. HLS supports H.264 and HEVC; DASH supports H.264 and VP9. YouTube describes HLS and DASH as better suited to 4K and other high-resolution use cases, but not ultra-low latency; their segment-based delivery typically adds more latency than RTMP.

RTMPS is RTMP over an SSL connection. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance requires an address using the rtmps protocol, a valid ingestion endpoint and application path, and port 443. Use the endpoint and key YouTube provides for the event rather than guessing a server path. The protocol choice is an ingest setting, not a substitute for configuring the encoder’s output correctly.
How to choose and launch a prerecorded YouTube stream
- Decide whether the broadcast is continuous or scheduled. For a channel that should keep playing, choose a service with looping or playlist support. For a dated event, confirm that the service can schedule the video, set the destination and start automatically.
- Check the source file against the service limits. Confirm accepted container and codec, duration, maximum file size and upload constraints. For StreamYard’s automatic mode, the documented format is MP4 with H.264; its paid-plan output is up to 1080p and upload bitrate ceiling is 10 Mbps. For other services, verify current plan-specific limits directly.
- Prepare the YouTube destination. Create or select the YouTube live event, then use the service’s YouTube connection flow or its instructions for the event’s stream key. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send video to that ingest. If using Castr’s manual key method, its instructions say the description must be edited in YouTube’s dashboard.
- Set schedule and playback behavior. Check the selected time zone, start time, end behavior, playlist order and loop count. For StreamYard automatic prerecorded streams, playback ends when the video is finished. Restream documents looping up to ten times; Castr’s infinite-loop availability is plan-dependent.
- Test privately before a public event. Confirm that the correct recording, destination, title and description are selected and that playback appears as expected in YouTube. If you use an encoder workflow, verify the selected protocol, endpoint, key and encoder output before the public start.
- Review rights and YouTube policies. Uploading a video to a live-streaming service does not grant rights to broadcast its music, footage or other material. Obtain the necessary permissions, and check YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream requirements. Repeated or minimally changed prerecorded programming can also raise channel-level reused-content or monetization questions; a scheduled live format does not itself guarantee monetization eligibility.
Common problems and what to check
- The event does not start on time: verify the scheduled time and time zone, that the destination is the intended YouTube channel, and that the selected file has finished uploading and processing. Check service-specific scheduling limits.
- YouTube shows no incoming video: confirm that the stream key and endpoint belong to the selected event and have not been mistyped or replaced. In an encoder setup, confirm protocol, URL path and output settings; for RTMPS, YouTube specifies port 443.
- The upload is rejected or playback fails: check the file type, codec, duration and size against the current plan’s documented limits. StreamYard’s automatic prerecorded mode specifies MP4/H.264; do not assume another service has identical requirements.
- The stream ends after one play: check whether looping is enabled and whether the plan supports the loop behavior you need. Restream documents a maximum of ten loops for a scheduled video; Castr says infinite looping is available on Premium and higher.
- You cannot add overlays or show comments: this is a limitation of StreamYard’s automatic prerecorded mode. Use its regular studio workflow and start the broadcast yourself if those studio features are necessary.
- The broadcast is live but has a copyright or monetization issue: resolve rights for all included material and review YouTube’s applicable channel and live-stream policies. A successful ingest does not establish permission or monetization eligibility.
Costs and practical trade-offs
Managed services trade server administration for a recurring service entitlement, and their storage, event length, file size, loop count and destination limits may vary by plan. Compare those limits to your exact schedule and source files before paying. Self-managed NGINX RTMP or another encoder route avoids a hosted prerecorded-playback plan, but still requires a machine or server, a stable connection and operational attention; the total cost depends on infrastructure and maintenance you provide.
StreamNeo offers short and long billing periods, with the same slot features on each term. It also provides a upload-time calculator, a cloud-versus-PC cost calculator and a copyright safety checklist.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload a video or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream at their uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot; the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, once per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
