The second half of 2026 has a crowded theatrical calendar, with major releases spanning science fiction, horror, action, animation, fantasy and comic-book cinema. The dates below are U.S. theatrical release dates and reflect the current schedule as of August 8, 2026. Release plans can still change.

“Best” is used here as an editorial shortlist—not a guarantee of quality. These are the films with the clearest reasons to pay attention, whether because of their filmmakers, source material, casts, franchise history or unusual premises.

1. The Dog Stars — August 28, 2026

Ridley Scott directs this post-apocalyptic thriller based on Peter Heller’s novel. Jacob Elordi plays Hig, a pilot living at an isolated homestead with Bangley, a survivalist portrayed by Josh Brolin. Margaret Qualley, Guy Pearce, Benedict Wong and Allison Janney are also part of the cast.

The film’s appeal is the combination of a literary survival story and a director with extensive experience in ambitious science fiction. Its focus on isolation, danger and the uneasy relationship between two survivors gives it a different angle from a conventional end-of-the-world spectacle.

Release: August 28, 2026, in theaters. See the official 20th Century Studios page.

2. Insidious: Out of the Further — August 21, 2026

This new Insidious story follows Gemma, a young mother who discovers that she can enter the Further, the supernatural realm established by the earlier films. She is raising her daughter in the house where she grew up, adding a personal and generational dimension to the haunting.

Amelia Eve stars, Lin Shaye returns as Elise Rainier and Jacob Chase directs. Rather than simply returning to the Lambert family storyline, the film appears designed to widen the franchise’s mythology while keeping Elise connected to its supernatural world.

Release: August 21, 2026, exclusively in theaters. Details are available from Sony Pictures.

3. Resident Evil — September 18, 2026

Sony’s new Resident Evil film is scheduled for an exclusive theatrical release through TriStar Pictures, Constantin Film and Davis Films. At present, the official studio listing confirms the release information but does not provide a detailed public synopsis or a complete cast list.

That limited information is itself worth noting. This is a new theatrical start for one of gaming’s most recognizable survival-horror properties, but viewers should be cautious about treating rumored story details or casting reports as confirmed until the studio publishes them.

Release: September 18, 2026, in theaters. Follow the official Sony listing for updates.

4. Street Fighter — October 16, 2026

Paramount’s new live-action Street Fighter adaptation is directed by Kitao Sakurai. The project brings Capcom’s arcade fighting franchise back to the big screen, with its familiar tournament structure, colorful characters and combat-focused premise.

The property has already had a difficult live-action history, so the central question is how this version handles the balance between stylized action and a story that works beyond the game’s character roster. The source material gives the film a distinctive visual foundation, but the execution will determine whether it can escape the reputation of earlier adaptations.

Release: October 16, 2026, in theaters. See Paramount’s official page.

5. Clayface — October 23, 2026

Clayface is a DC Studios production directed by James Watkins and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. The film is being positioned as a horror-focused interpretation of the Batman villain rather than a standard Batman adventure.

Clayface’s defining ability is his shape-shifting body, traditionally made from mud. That concept naturally lends itself to body horror, identity anxiety and practical or digital transformation effects. The film’s North American theatrical release is scheduled for October 23, with international releases beginning October 21.

Release: October 23, 2026, in North America. The current date is listed on the official movie site; DC’s character page provides background on the villain.

6. The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping — November 20, 2026

Lionsgate is adapting Suzanne Collins’s Sunrise on the Reaping for the big screen. The story takes place in Panem 24 years before the original The Hunger Games and begins on the morning of the 50th Hunger Games, known as the Second Quarter Quell.

This is a prequel rather than a continuation of Katniss Everdeen’s story. Its interest comes from returning to an earlier stage of Panem’s history and showing another version of the event that shaped the political system at the center of the franchise.

The film is scheduled for theaters across North America and an IMAX release.

Release: November 20, 2026. See the Lionsgate announcement.

7. Dune: Part Three — December 18, 2026

Denis Villeneuve directs and co-writes the third film in his Dune series. The movie adapts Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah and is described by its official site as the conclusion of Villeneuve’s trilogy.

Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Anya Taylor-Joy, Robert Pattinson and Javier Bardem are among the announced cast. Following the scale of Dune and Dune: Part Two, the film is one of the year’s major large-format science-fiction releases.

Release: December 18, 2026, exclusively in theaters. Visit the official film site.

8. Avengers: Doomsday — December 18, 2026

Joe and Anthony Russo direct this major Marvel crossover. Marvel’s current information identifies Robert Downey Jr. and a large ensemble connected to the Avengers, Fantastic Four and X-Men, including Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Pedro Pascal, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and James Marsden.

The film’s release date requires particular attention. An earlier Marvel announcement gave May 1, 2026, but the current official movie page lists December 18, 2026. That places it on the same date as Dune: Part Three, although either film could still move before release.

Release: December 18, 2026, in theaters. Check the current Marvel listing rather than older schedule announcements.

9. The Angry Birds Movie 3 — December 23, 2026

Paramount’s third Angry Birds feature is scheduled for the holiday period. The published premise has Red dealing with fatherhood while also trying to save the world, combining the series’ family comedy with another large-scale adventure.

It is one of the clearest remaining theatrical options for families looking for a new animated release during the Christmas break.

Release: December 23, 2026, in theaters. See Paramount’s official page.

10. PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie — August 14, 2026

The third theatrical PAW Patrol film arrives in August, with Paramount describing it as a new adventure for the popular animated franchise. Its dinosaur theme and recognizable rescue-team characters make it the most directly targeted 2026 theatrical release for very young children.

Release: August 14, 2026, in theaters. The date appears in Paramount Pictures’ current release listings.

2026 movie dates that have changed or are often misreported

Several frequently repeated release claims are no longer accurate:

  1. Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is not a 2026 release. Netflix currently gives it a February 12, 2027 theatrical date, followed by an April 2, 2027 Netflix release.
  2. The animated Avatar: The Last Airbender movie is no longer an upcoming theatrical release in the current Paramount materials. The project is identified as Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender and has moved to Paramount+.
  3. Avengers: Doomsday is not currently scheduled for May 1. Marvel’s current page lists December 18, 2026.
  4. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is not still upcoming as of August 8, 2026; Marvel’s listings give it a July 31, 2026 release date.
  5. Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday currently share December 18, 2026. That unusual date collision should be checked again before making plans.
