Archaeologists working at Troy reported finding sling stones concentrated in front of a palace structure assigned to Troy VI. Excavation leader Rüstem Aslan said their concentration may point to defensive or offensive activity in the area. The find is a possible clue to conflict at Late Bronze Age Troy—not proof that the events of Homer’s Iliad happened as told.
What new evidence was found at Troy?
In a July 8, 2025 report, Anadolu Agency said archaeologists found sling stones about 3,500 years old in front of a palace structure assigned to Troy Phase VI. The team was investigating a Late Bronze Age destruction layer during the 2025 excavation season. The report also noted earlier discoveries of arrowheads and weapons near the palace and city walls.
Aslan, the excavation leader, interpreted the stones’ concentration as suggesting that the area may have served defensive and offensive purposes. Archaeology Magazine likewise described them as a clue to possible conflict and quoted Aslan’s assessment. Those accounts support a cautious reading: the stones may be relevant to conflict, but they do not establish that an attack or siege occurred, identify attackers, or connect the objects to a particular war.
The 2025 find has been described in news reports; a full scholarly excavation report documenting its context, catalogue, dating method, and independent assessment has not been established in the available published accounts. That distinction matters because an object’s precise position and archaeological layer help determine what conclusions it can support.

What is Troy VI?
Troy is a real archaeological site on the mound of Hisarlık on Türkiye’s Aegean coast, not a single city preserved from one moment. The UNESCO World Heritage Centre describes the site as having 4,000 years of history and places it 4.8 km from the southern entrance to the Dardanelles. UNESCO inscribed it on the World Heritage List in 1998.
Its remains include a citadel, defensive walls and gates, and a lower city, built and altered across successive occupations. “Troy VI” refers to one archaeological phase within that layered site. A find assigned to Troy VI belongs to a particular phase of the settlement; it cannot automatically be treated as evidence for every period or for the whole story later associated with Troy.

UNESCO notes that Homer immortalized the siege tradition in the Iliad. The epic is a literary tradition, while excavated structures and objects are material evidence. The two can be discussed together, but the existence of the site and its layers does not establish that all the epic’s characters and events happened as narrated.
What earlier evidence points to destruction or conflict?
Archaeologists have discussed weapons and destruction at Troy for decades. The 2025 Anadolu Agency report mentions earlier arrowheads and weapons found near the palace and walls. In a 2004 essay, archaeologist and excavation director Manfred Korfmann discussed a conflagration, some skeletons, and heaps of sling bullets as evidence connected with Troy’s destruction. He assessed that Troy appeared to have been destroyed around 1180 BCE, but that date and interpretation are his scholarly position, not a definitive account of the new 2025 discoveries.

Korfmann allowed that one or more armed conflicts might have contributed to the poetic tradition, while acknowledging that the evidence could not identify a single memorable war. His caution was explicit: “We still cannot prove that the Trojan War took place.” His 2004 essay distinguishes evidence consistent with conflict from proof of the specific legendary event.
A 2024 article by Aslan and Fecri Polat in the Turkish Historical Society journal Höyük re-evaluates Late Bronze Age sword pommels from Troy. The authors discuss a pommel found outside the citadel in 2019 as relevant to the possibility that some swords were produced locally. It adds context about weapons and craft at the site, not independent proof of Homer’s war. Readers interested in the literary tradition can turn to Homer’s Iliad as literature, not as an archaeological report.

Do the sling stones prove the Trojan War happened?
No. The reported stones may add to evidence that weapons and possible conflict belong to Troy’s archaeological record, but they do not identify a Greek invasion, a siege matching the epic, or a single historical event later remembered as the Trojan War. Destruction at a site and identification of a named event are different claims: the first may be supported by layers and objects; the second requires evidence linking those remains to that specific event.
Aslan told Anadolu Agency: “This indicates that more significant finds related to possible destruction may emerge as excavations progress.” The wording is about possible future finds, not confirmation of a war. Stronger assessment of the sling stones would depend on detailed publication of their context and dating, followed by independent scholarly evaluation; even then, evidence of conflict would not by itself prove the epic’s narrative.
