The project will explore the tomb beneath St. Peter’s Basilica through faith, history and archaeology. Vatican News announced Pope Leo XIV’s involvement in the project, but has not confirmed an exact release date or where viewers will be able to watch it.
What is the new documentary about?
Vatican News announced the project on 5 December 2025. Its subject is the discovery and history of the Apostle Peter’s tomb in the Vatican Necropolis, below St. Peter’s Basilica. The producers frame the story around the site’s archaeological history and its religious significance.
The announcement says the documentary is planned for 2026, in connection with the 400th anniversary of the dedication of the present basilica on 18 November 1626. That is a planned release window, not a confirmed launch date.
Who is involved?
- Guide: Chris Pratt, who described the project to Vatican News as an honor and said he was grateful for the access granted to help bring Peter’s legacy to the screen.
- Director: Spanish filmmaker Paula Ortiz.
- Writer: Andrea Tornielli, with help from Pietro Zander.
- Producers: Vatican Media, the Fabric of Saint Peter, and AF Films, represented by Frank Ariza and Manu Vega.
Pope Leo XIV is associated with the project in Vatican News’ announcement. His separate apostolic letter on the importance of archaeology, dated 11 December 2025, offers a wider reflection on why material remains matter to Christian history. It is not itself an archaeological report about the tomb.

Where is St. Peter’s tomb, and what does the site’s history say?
The official history of St. Peter’s Basilica places the tomb beneath the main altar. It says a grave was dug on the southern slope of Vatican Hill, in front of Nero’s circus, and that a small funerary aedicule was built there about a century after Peter’s martyrdom.
The Basilica’s account connects the monument with the “Trophy of Gaius,” which early Christians regarded as Peter’s tomb. The site became a pilgrimage destination before Constantine. Graffiti found nearby includes Latin references to Christ and Peter; a fragment bearing Greek letters has been interpreted in more than one way, including as “Peter is here” or as an invocation of Peter. These are interpretations of inscriptions, not equally certain translations.

Why the tomb is beneath the present basilica
The burial place shaped the location of successive churches. According to the Basilica’s account, the fourth-century basilica built by Pope Sylvester and Emperor Constantine was constructed over the burial area. The Renaissance basilica later succeeded it, and a sequence of altars continued above the monumental tomb. That continuity is why the site lies below the main altar of the church visitors see today.
What the excavations established—and what remains a matter of interpretation
The Basilica dates archaeological explorations of the area to 1939–1949. Vatican News says Pope Pius XII officially announced the tomb’s location in 1950 after excavations began in 1940.

In 1968, Pope Paul VI said the relics had been identified “in a way that we can consider convincing,” adding, “We have reason to believe” that Peter’s remains had been found. This was Paul VI’s qualified conclusion about the identification; it should not be mistaken for an uncontested scientific certainty.
The documentary’s planned storytelling brings together archaeological evidence, the Catholic Church’s historical and devotional identification of the site, and a theological reading of its significance. Those are related, but distinct, ways of describing what the tomb means.
