As of September 27, 2026, seven horror or horror-adjacent films are on the current U.S. theatrical schedule: two September releases with established national listings and five titles that opened on September 25. Actual screenings depend on your city, theater and ticket inventory, so check local showtimes before you leave.
Horror movies currently playing
This list treats “out now” as released or listed on the current domestic schedule by September 27, 2026. Release scale comes from Box Office Mojo where stated; a wide or limited label does not guarantee that every theater has a screening.

Choose by subgenre and premise
Video-game adaptation: Resident Evil
Resident Evil is the clearest choice if you want a recognizable game-based horror property. The Associated Press identifies Zach Cregger, director of Barbarian and Weapons, as the filmmaker behind this latest adaptation and lists Austin Abrams as its star. Sony Pictures released it on September 18.
Survival and action: Onslaught
Onslaught is built around a protective-parent survival setup rather than a supernatural premise. Adria Arjona plays an Army sniper trying to keep her daughter safe from genetically engineered super soldiers. Adam Wingard directs the A24 thriller, which opened September 4.

Gothic, period and darkly comic horror: Victorian Psycho
Victorian Psycho is the September 25 release for viewers looking for a period-flavored horror film with comedy and thriller elements. Box Office Mojo classifies it across all three genres and lists it as a wide release.
Genre-mixed and limited releases
The other September 25 openings cover a broad range of labels rather than one shared style:
Rank #2
- Hellbilly Hollow is listed simply as horror and has a limited release.
- Family combines horror and thriller and is also limited.
- The Vvaan mixes action, adventure, drama, fantasy, horror, mystery and thriller, with a limited release.
- Never After Dark spans crime, fantasy, horror, science fiction and thriller and is listed as a wide release.
Wide versus limited release
A wide release generally gives a film a better chance of appearing in many markets, while a limited release may be concentrated in major cities or selected theaters. In this current group, Victorian Psycho and Never After Dark are marked wide; Hellbilly Hollow, Family and The Vvaan are marked limited. The listings do not state a wide-or-limited classification for Resident Evil or Onslaught.
These labels describe distribution scale, not live inventory. A wide title can sell out or skip a particular venue, and a limited title can appear in your area if a local theater has booked it.

How to find a screening near you
- Search a theater-ticket service or your preferred cinema chain using your ZIP code or city and the date you plan to attend.
- Search each title separately; smaller releases may not appear under a general “horror” filter.
- Confirm that the listing is for the correct date, theater and format before purchasing. A national release date does not mean every city has a screening.
- Recheck on the day of your visit. Theater schedules and ticket inventory can change, particularly for limited releases.
Quick choices for this weekend
- Want a game adaptation? Start with Resident Evil.
- Prefer military survival and engineered enemies? Choose Onslaught.
- Looking for period horror with comedy and thriller elements? Try Victorian Psycho.
- Need the widest listed distribution? Check theaters for Victorian Psycho or Never After Dark, while still verifying local inventory.
- Open to a more specialized booking? Search for the limited releases Hellbilly Hollow, Family and The Vvaan by city rather than assuming they are nearby.
Titles that are not out yet on September 27
Do not count Begotten, Appofeniacs, The Influencer Project or Beware Boiúna as currently playing. The published listings place those titles on September 30, a future date relative to this September 27 snapshot.
For the most reliable answer to “what horror movie is playing near me,” use the release list above as a starting point, then confirm a live showtime and ticket availability for your specific theater.
