Kill. Bury. Print. turns a local newspaper’s conflict with McCurtain County law enforcement into a documentary about the 2023 recording controversy. In his October 6, 2026 review, Brett Fieldcamp argues that the story merits attention but that the film’s treatment of serious, unresolved allegations falls short of the substantiation viewers should expect from journalism.
What is Kill. Bury. Print. about?
The Rachel Maddow-produced film, directed by Ben Klein, follows the McCurtain County Gazette’s conflict with local law enforcement after the newspaper’s critical reporting. Fieldcamp’s review places the wider dispute in 2022–23 and focuses on a recording that became central to the scandal.

According to the Gazette’s account, publisher Bruce Willingham left a voice-activated recording pen in the commissioners’ room after a meeting on March 6, 2023. The paper reported that the recording captured officials discussing violence against its publisher and a reporter, along with other remarks. Those are the newspaper’s descriptions of what the audio contained, not findings that anyone had a proven intent to act.
Fieldcamp says officials characterized the comments as joking or “locker room talk.” His review describes the resulting public scrutiny and calls for resignations, while also criticizing the documentary’s use of speculation and serious allegations—including claims about Sheriff Kevin Clardy and unresolved accusations involving Chris Willingham—that he considers inadequately corroborated. The available sources do not establish the truth of those disputed claims.

What did the McCurtain County recording reveal?
The Gazette’s April 17, 2023 account framed the recording as capturing county officials discussing killing and burying the newspaper’s reporters. That is the paper’s characterization of its reporting and the audio. It should not be conflated with a court finding or treated as proof of criminal intent.
There is also a separate, narrower official record. On June 30, 2023, Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond announced that the state Attorney General’s Office and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation had concluded their investigation. They found no evidence of criminal acts or other conduct that would provide statutory grounds for ouster proceedings against Sheriff Kevin Clardy. Drummond wrote: “While I understand this outcome may be frustrating to you after calling for the Sheriff’s resignation and removal, it is the only appropriate conclusion under the law.”

That conclusion addresses whether the investigation found grounds under the law for ouster proceedings against the sheriff. It does not validate or disprove every statement attributed to people on the recording, or settle every ethical and narrative dispute raised by the documentary.

Why does Fieldcamp say the documentary trips over ethics?
The review’s central question is whether documentaries have journalistic responsibilities—and whether those responsibilities still operate in the same way in 2026. Fieldcamp’s answer is expressed through his criticism of the film’s evidence: a consequential story about a newspaper’s conflict with local officials is worth telling, but presenting inflammatory allegations and speculation without enough corroboration can weaken a documentary’s credibility as journalism.
The distinction that matters is between a film’s presentation, the newspaper’s account of its recording, and the state investigation’s legal conclusion. They cover overlapping events but are not interchangeable evidence. Fieldcamp’s ethical criticism is his assessment of the documentary, not an official finding about its accuracy or conduct.
