If you want classic horror, start with Carrie. For psychological suspense, choose Misery; for fantasy, try The Gunslinger, the first book in the Dark Tower series. There is no objectively correct first Stephen King book—the best choice is the kind of story you already enjoy.
Which Stephen King book should I read first?
Carrie is a useful default if you want classic horror or want to begin with King’s first published novel. His official works list dates its publication to April 5, 1974, and the Stephen King Books UK guide identifies it as his debut and recommends it as ground-breaking horror. That makes it a natural starting point, not a claim that it is every reader’s favorite or the easiest read.
If horror is not what you’re after, choose by genre instead:
| What you want | Try | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Psychological suspense | Misery | A novelist, Paul Sheldon, is stranded after a car crash and rescued by Annie Wilkes, who calls herself his Number One Fan. |
| Fantasy | The Gunslinger | It begins the Dark Tower series, so it is a series entry rather than a standalone starting point. |
| Short fiction | Skeleton Crew | A collection of stories that can be read separately. |
| Alternate history | 11.22.63 | The publisher’s guide suggests it for this genre. |
| Epic survival | The Stand | The publisher’s guide suggests it for this kind of story. |
| Small-town horror | ‘Salem’s Lot | The publisher’s guide suggests it for this horror setting. |
| Character-driven fiction | The Green Mile | The publisher’s guide suggests it for readers seeking this focus. |
| Crime thriller | Holly | The publisher’s guide suggests it for crime-thriller readers. |
The genre matches above come from the Stephen King Books UK guide, a publisher’s guide rather than an independent ranking. The available guidance does not establish comparable page counts, difficulty levels, or intensity ratings, so those are not reliable ways to rank these options here.

What Stephen King reportedly recommends
In a report dated August 28, 2025, Eric Eisenberg at CinemaBlend reproduced Stephen King’s response to a Reddit AMA question about three books for new readers: “SALEM’S LOT, MISERY, and THE LONG WALK. All of them are still my friends.” That is King’s reported personal selection, not a universal reading order or ranking; the original AMA thread was not independently verified for this account.
Of those three, Misery is the clearest fit if you want psychological suspense, while ‘Salem’s Lot is the guide’s pick for small-town horror. The reported quote also names The Long Walk; use the title as one of King’s own suggested options, rather than as proof that it suits every first-time reader.
