The two films behind the September 2024 headline were Rebel Ridge, an action thriller, and His Three Daughters, a family drama. They offer sharply different kinds of viewing: one follows a former Marine confronting a small-town police department; the other brings three estranged sisters together as their father’s health declines. The “best in years” label was an enthusiastic judgment, not an objective ranking—and the release timing and review scores below are historical, not current availability or ratings.
Which two movies did the headline mean?
BGR’s September 11, 2024 article referred to Rebel Ridge and His Three Daughters. At that time, BGR reported that Rebel Ridge had arrived on Netflix the prior week. His Three Daughters was then playing in a limited theatrical run, with Netflix release scheduled for September 20, 2024. That schedule describes the films’ 2024 rollout; it does not establish where either film is available today.

What is Rebel Ridge about?
Rebel Ridge is an action thriller starring Aaron Pierre as Terry Richmond, an ex-Marine who comes to a small town to post bail for his cousin. When local police seize his savings, Terry is drawn into a confrontation with police chief Sandy Burnne, played by Don Johnson, and the department. Court clerk Summer McBride, played by AnnaSophia Robb, becomes an ally as the two uncover a conspiracy.
Its premise centers on a practical, immediate goal—getting bail money to a family member—that escalates into a larger conflict with local authority. For viewers choosing between the two films, this is the more suspense- and action-oriented option.

What is His Three Daughters about?
Written and directed by Azazel Jacobs, His Three Daughters stars Natasha Lyonne, Elizabeth Olsen, and Carrie Coon as sisters who reunite in their father’s home while his health declines. Their different lives and strained relationships bring old resentments to the surface as the family faces an impending loss.
Rather than a thriller built around a conspiracy, this is an intimate family drama focused on the pressure of being together during a painful transition. Choose it for sibling tension, character-driven storytelling, and a more reflective mood.

What did the reported review scores say in 2024?
BGR reported Rotten Tomatoes critics’ scores of 94% for Rebel Ridge and 98% for His Three Daughters in its September 11, 2024 article. Those are dated figures reported by BGR, not a current check of Rotten Tomatoes pages. They represent critics’ scores, not audience ratings, and do not make either film an objectively proven “best” movie.

| If you want… | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A tense action thriller | Rebel Ridge | A former Marine’s attempt to post bail turns into a conflict with local police and a conspiracy. |
| An intimate family drama | His Three Daughters | Three sisters confront old resentments while their father’s health declines. |
The 2024 headline paired two films that critics’ scores, as reported at the time, made sound like strong options—but the more useful distinction is tone. Pick Rebel Ridge for escalating conflict and suspense, or His Three Daughters for a close, emotionally fraught family story. The original claim that they were among Netflix’s “best movies in years” remains an editorial opinion rather than a measurable ranking.
