Spoiler-aware cast guide: character roles and setup only; no murder-solution spoilers.
Uzo Aduba plays consulting detective Cordelia Cupp, Randall Park is FBI special agent Edwin Park, and Giancarlo Esposito plays White House chief usher A.B. Wynter, whose death sets Netflix’s fictional White House mystery in motion. The eight-episode series premiered on Netflix on March 20, 2025. It was inspired by Kate Andersen Brower’s nonfiction book, but its murder mystery and characters’ case are fictional.
Who’s Who in the White House Whodunit?
In the series, Cordelia Cupp investigates Wynter’s death after a disastrous state dinner. The setting’s 132 rooms and 157 suspects are part of the show’s fictional setup, not a count of real White House rooms or people. Netflix Tudum’s cast guide introduces the people around the case; the guide below groups them by how they connect to the investigation and the residence.
The investigators and the case’s central figure
| Actor | Character | Role and why they matter |
|---|---|---|
| Uzo Aduba | Cordelia Cupp | A consulting detective for Washington, D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department, brought in to investigate Wynter’s death. She is observant, confident, relentless—and a birder. |
| Randall Park | Edwin Park | An FBI special agent assigned to work alongside Cupp, serving as her investigative counterpart. |
| Giancarlo Esposito | A.B. Wynter | The meticulous, protocol-minded chief usher, devoted to the White House residence and its people. He has worked there for more than 20 years in the series’ backstory; his death launches the mystery. |
Aduba describes Cupp’s perspective this way: “This case is unsolvable to everyone except Cordelia Cupp.”

Is The Residence based on a true story?
No: the murder plot is not a factual account. The series takes inspiration from Kate Andersen Brower’s nonfiction book The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House, which explores White House staff and history, but Netflix describes the show as an all-new fictional story. Creator and showrunner Paul William Davies told Netflix Tudum that “the sheer theatricality of it all” was what struck him about Brower’s book. Shondaland likewise characterized the series as a “fantastical departure” from the nonfiction source.
Optional further reading: Brower’s book is for readers interested in the real-world White House and its staff; it is not a guide to the series’ fictional characters or murder mystery.
