Netflix’s The Hijacking of Flight 601 is inspired by a real 1973 hijacking—but the historical aircraft was SAM Colombia Flight HK-1274, not the show’s fictional Aerobolivar Flight 601. The real ordeal involved two Paraguayan footballers, a series of landings across Latin America and negotiations over ransom and political demands. Treat the series as a dramatization, not a documentary reconstruction.
What happened to the real Flight 601?
On May 30, 1973, gunmen hijacked SAM Colombia Flight HK-1274 during its scheduled route from Bogotá, with stops at Cali and Pereira. Univision reports that 84 people were aboard; Netflix’s account describes the passengers and crew as “more than 80.” Univision’s 2024 report and Netflix Tudum’s historical explainer both identify the aircraft as a SAM service on the Bogotá–Cali–Pereira route.
The hijackers forced the plane through a succession of diversions and landings in Latin America. Tudum lists Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Paraguay, Argentina and Aruba among the countries involved. Passengers were released or escaped during the ordeal, which lasted roughly 60 hours according to Tudum; Univision gives a duration of 55 hours. The accounts therefore establish a prolonged hijacking, but not one uncontested exact duration.
Who hijacked SAM Flight HK-1274?
Historical accounts identify the hijackers as Francisco Solano López and Eusebio Borja, Paraguayan footballers. Netflix Tudum reports that Solano López was arrested in Argentina. Borja was believed to have escaped by jumping from the aircraft during a stop and was never found, according to Tudum and Univision. Those are reported outcomes, not a basis for treating every detail of the men’s fate as conclusively established.

What did the hijackers demand?
Ransom and political concessions figured in accounts of the real hijacking. Netflix Tudum reports that the hijackers demanded $200,000 and the release of political prisoners, and that SAM ultimately paid $50,000. These are figures in Tudum’s historical summary; they should not be confused with the separate wording of Netflix’s series synopsis.
Netflix’s official Media Center synopsis frames the fictional drama around demands for 50 political prisoners and ransom. That prisoner count belongs to the series premise; it is not, by itself, verification of the precise historical demand. The synopsis is available from the Netflix Media Center.
