Supacell is a six-episode British superhero drama that puts extraordinary abilities into the lives of five ordinary people in South London. Its strongest distinction is the way powers sit alongside family ties, work, money pressures and neighborhood life rather than replacing them with a conventional world-saving origin story. The result is a focused, character-led take on superhero fiction, with a season finale that leaves its central conflict unresolved.
What is Supacell about?
Created by Rapman, Supacell follows five Black South Londoners who develop extraordinary powers. Michael Lasaki discovers that he can travel through time and space, and tries to bring the others together to save Dionne, the woman he loves. Netflix classifies the series as a British drama, with science-fiction, rap and hip-hop, and action/adventure elements. Watch the series on Netflix.
The premise gives the story a shared community rather than a conventional team assembled through a formal superhero origin. Its characters still have to contend with relationships, children, siblings, jobs and trouble on the streets. Rapman described his intention as telling “a story about powers, but with normal people [who have] relationship problems, problems with their children, problems with their siblings, problems at work, problems on the streets.” (Netflix Tudum, August 8, 2024.)
What makes the series work as a superhero drama?
Everyday life stays in the frame
The powers do not erase the pressures the characters already face. That contrast gives the fantasy a grounded center: the story is not only about what someone can do, but what a new ability means for a person with family responsibilities, financial pressures and ties to a specific place. South London is not just a backdrop; the characters’ community shapes the stakes and the way their lives intersect.

The ensemble converges around a personal goal
Each of the five brings a different ability and a separate life into Michael’s effort to save Dionne. That structure lets the series build an ensemble without making its characters interchangeable. The powers can create action, but the more revealing question is how each person responds to them and to the consequences of being drawn into Michael’s mission.
The tone favors grounded reactions
Rapman has said that reactions to powers should feel as grounded as the powers themselves: “You want it to be realistic because just as important as the power, is that the reaction to the power is as grounded as normal. That’s how you start thinking, ‘This is what a real superhero show is like.’” (Netflix Tudum, August 8, 2024.) That approach helps distinguish Supacell from superhero stories that move quickly from discovery to spectacle.

How many episodes are in Supacell?
Season 1 has six episodes. Netflix UK lists runtimes between 46 and 59 minutes. Its title page also offers offline downloads and multiple audio and subtitle options; availability and options can vary by region. Check Netflix’s listing for the current details where you watch.
Is Supacell worth watching?
If you want a superhero drama that gives relationships and the characters’ ordinary pressures as much weight as the powers, Supacell is a strong choice. Its six-episode season brings distinct lives together around a clear emotional objective, while the South London setting keeps the story grounded. The season is also built as an opening chapter: its finale changes Michael’s direction and leaves the conflict with the organization hunting powered people open, so viewers looking for a fully resolved story should expect a cliffhanger.

Has Supacell been renewed for season 2?
Yes. Netflix officially announced Season 2 on August 13, 2024. The announcement did not give a premiere date, so a release date should not be treated as confirmed on the basis of that renewal notice. Rapman described the first season as “my Batman Begins” and said, “Season 2 is when you really see what they become.” He has also said he planned the story through Season 3; that describes his creative plan, not a guarantee that every planned season will be produced. (Netflix Tudum, August 13, 2024.)

The characters’ abilities
Netflix Tudum’s explainer describes the central abilities as follows:
- Tazer: invisibility.
- Andre: super strength.
- Rodney: super speed and healing.
- Sabrina: telekinesis.
- Michael: travel through time and space.
The show links these abilities to a “supacell,” a fictional mutation of sickle cell disorder. This is an invented supernatural premise within the series, not a medical explanation of real sickle cell disease. Rapman has said he wanted to start from a recognizable inherited condition and hoped the story might help people affected feel seen; the show’s conceit should not be taken as health information. (Netflix Tudum, August 8, 2024.)
The organization hunting people with powers
The season’s threat is an organization that tracks, manipulates and captures powered people. Rapman frames the agency as an institution that sees them as dangerous and believes it is policing a threat. The people hired to capture them have powers themselves, adding another layer to the question of who gets to define someone as a danger.
What the finale changes
Dionne dies in the finale. Rapman said, “There’s no coming back from the dead in this show.” Michael’s response turns toward revenge, shifting the emotional direction of the story while leaving the conflict with the agency unresolved. (Netflix Tudum, August 8, 2024.)
