Netflix’s One Hundred Years of Solitude adapts Gabriel García Márquez’s novel about the Buendía family and the rise and decline of Macondo. The Spanish-language series was filmed entirely in Colombia. Its first part premiered in December 2024; Netflix scheduled Part Two and a special finale for August 2026.
What is Netflix’s One Hundred Years of Solitude about?
The series adapts García Márquez’s 1967 novel, centering on generations of the Buendía family and the town of Macondo. Netflix’s synopsis begins with cousins José Arcadio Buendía and Úrsula Iguarán, who marry despite their parents’ opposition, leave their village and eventually establish Macondo. Their descendants’ story is shaped by love, madness, war and a family curse.
Macondo changes along with the family. In Netflix’s description of the second part, the arrival of the railroad and a banana company help transform the town and contribute to its decline. Rather than a standalone story about magical events, the adaptation follows a family and a place through generations of change.
Is the Netflix series in Spanish?
Yes. Netflix says the series was filmed entirely in Colombia and in Spanish, with the support and collaboration of García Márquez’s family. That production context is central to what distinguishes this adaptation: it brings the Colombian setting and the novel’s language into the screen version.

Laura Mora and Alex García López were named as directors of Part One. Netflix named Mora and Carlos Moreno as directors for Part Two and the special finale. The production’s division into installments gives the multi-generational story room to unfold across the family’s history, though the available details do not establish how closely every plot point or episode corresponds to the book.
Should you read the book before watching?
No prior reading is required to understand the basic premise: the series follows the Buendías and Macondo from the town’s founding through its transformation. The novel is a useful companion if you want to encounter García Márquez’s original telling or compare how a long literary family history is shaped for television. Netflix says the book has sold more than 50 million copies and been translated into more than 40 languages; those figures are the company’s own statements.
