Netflix’s Greta Gerwig film is titled Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew. It is an origin story based on C. S. Lewis’s 1955 novel, with IMAX previews beginning February 10, 2027, a global theatrical release on February 12, and Netflix streaming from April 2, 2027, according to the company’s September 22, 2026 announcement.
When does Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew come out?
Netflix has announced three dates, depending on how you plan to watch:
| Viewing option | Date | What Netflix announced |
|---|---|---|
| IMAX sneak previews | February 10, 2027 | Previews begin in IMAX theaters. |
| Wide theatrical release | February 12, 2027 | The film opens widely in theaters globally. |
| Netflix | April 2, 2027 | The film arrives on Netflix. |
These dates come from Netflix Tudum’s September 22, 2026 announcement. A specific theater’s showtimes and availability on a local Netflix service may vary; local listings were not established in the announcement. Earlier reports of a 2026 release have been superseded by Netflix’s current dates.
What is the film about?
Netflix describes the movie as an origin story and the first adaptation of The Magician’s Nephew, centered on how travel between our world and Narnia began. Its official logline promises the creation of Narnia.

In the 1955 novel, Digory and Polly travel through parallel worlds by magic, reach a newly created Narnia, and inadvertently bring the witch Jadis with them. That is the book’s premise, not confirmation that every detail will appear unchanged in the film. For readers who want the source story, The Magician’s Nephew is the book behind the adaptation.
Where it fits in the Narnia books
The story is set earlier in Narnia’s fictional history than The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, but its book came later: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was published in 1950, while The Magician’s Nephew followed in 1955. The film adapts the origin story; it is not a remake of the 2005 The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe movie.

| Beatrice Campbell | Polly | Netflix first-look caption |

The Associated Press report of October 4, 2026 identifies Streep as the voice of Aslan. Netflix’s cast list names Streep but does not assign her a role in its article. The other announced performers are not assigned characters in the cited coverage, so further role identifications remain unconfirmed.
Why has the Aslan casting drawn comment?
AP reports that some conservative Christian commentators have questioned the reported choice of Streep to voice Aslan, a male lion often understood as a Christ figure. The same report describes a wait-and-see response from some Lewis scholars and fans. The film had not been released when AP reported; the discussion is reaction to a casting report, not a response to a finished performance.
