The show is Untamed, Netflix’s six-episode mystery thriller starring Eric Bana as National Park Service investigator Kyle Turner. Set in Yosemite, it earns the “Yellowstone meets True Detective” description through its rugged setting, institutional conflicts and grim investigation—not through any shared franchise connection.
The show is Untamed, Netflix’s six-episode mystery thriller starring Eric Bana as Kyle Turner, a special agent with the National Park Service’s Investigative Services Branch. Set mainly in Yosemite National Park, it combines a murder investigation, institutional secrets and a hostile wilderness—hence the shorthand that it is “Yellowstone meets True Detective.”
That comparison is useful, but only if it is understood as a description of tone and subject matter. Untamed is not connected to either franchise. Its distinctive idea is to make Yosemite itself part of the mystery: a spectacular but dangerous place where distance, weather, bureaucracy, money, family history and violence complicate every attempt to find the truth.
What is Untamed about?
The series begins when a woman falls to her death from El Capitan. Turner does not accept the incident as an accident, and the case quickly expands beyond a straightforward death investigation. Questions about the victim’s identity lead to a strange symbol, a remote encampment, an older case and secrets tied to Yosemite—and to Turner’s own past.

Netflix presents the story as a federal investigation inside a largely lawless wilderness. The six-episode first season uses a contained mystery structure rather than an endlessly expanding procedural. Its episodes are titled A Celestial Event, Jane Doe, El-o’-win, Gold Rush, Terces and All Trails Lead Here. You can find the official episode information and where to watch Untamed through Netflix’s series guide.
Why the Yellowstone comparison fits
Yellowstone is primarily a story about power, property, legacy and the people determined to control a contested American landscape. Untamed is a murder mystery rather than a ranching family saga, but it operates in a similar dramatic territory.
- Landscape is central, not decorative. Yosemite’s cliffs, forests and remote areas shape what characters can see, reach and conceal.
- Place creates conflict. The park brings together public institutions, local interests, workers, visitors and people with competing ideas about who belongs there and who has authority.
- Legacy matters. The investigation is connected to older events and personal histories rather than existing in isolation.
- The environment has power. In a conventional city crime drama, investigators can call for backup, review cameras and move quickly between locations. In Yosemite, terrain and isolation make every step slower and more dangerous.
Time’s review also places the show in Yellowstone’s cultural shadow while emphasizing that Yosemite is unusually important to the drama. That is the strongest reason to watch if what you enjoy about modern American thrillers is the collision between institutions and immense, contested landscapes.
Where the True Detective resemblance comes from
The True Detective comparison is tonal rather than structural. Untamed features a troubling death, damaged investigators, buried secrets and an atmosphere of isolation. The landscape gives the investigation a bleak, almost oppressive quality: the wilderness is beautiful, but it also hides evidence and makes people vulnerable.

There is no shared continuity, character or franchise connection between the shows. Netflix identifies Mark L. Smith and Elle Smith as the creators. Mark L. Smith is also associated with American Primeval and The Revenant, which helps explain the series’ interest in harsh environments and characters forced to survive them—but Untamed remains its own story.
Cast and characters
The central cast gives the investigation several different points of view:
| Actor | Character | Role in the story |
|---|---|---|
| Eric Bana | Kyle Turner | A National Park Service Investigative Services Branch special agent and the primary investigator. |
| Lily Santiago | Naya Vasquez | A rookie Yosemite ranger whose city-based investigative experience complements Turner’s knowledge of the wilderness. |
| Sam Neill | Paul Souter | Yosemite’s longtime chief park ranger and a significant figure in Turner’s professional and personal life. |
| Rosemarie DeWitt | Jill Bodwin | Turner’s ex-wife, with whom he shares a complicated bond and a common past. |
| Wilson Bethel | Shane Maguire | A former army ranger who works as the park’s wildlife management officer. |
Bana is also an executive producer. Mark L. Smith, Elle Smith and John Wells are among the producers and executive producers associated with the series. The show’s creative approach was deliberately designed to strip away modern conveniences and concentrate on what the characters can discover and endure in the environment, according to Smith’s comments to Netflix’s Tudum.
Is Untamed really Netflix’s most underrated show of 2025?

A more defensible argument is that the series may be underrated by viewers who value setting and atmosphere but approach it expecting a conventional crime thriller. Yosemite is the show’s major differentiator, and its best ideas come from placing a procedural investigation in a landscape that resists easy access and easy answers.
The critical response was mixed. Time praised the way Yosemite functions as a dramatic environment and recommended the show to viewers interested in the park’s inner workings, wilderness imagery and corruption-focused mystery, while criticizing the writing and acting as mediocre. That makes Untamed a worthwhile recommendation for the right audience, but not an uncontested masterpiece. Viewers seeking subtle character writing or a radically original detective format may be less persuaded than those looking for a brisk, atmospheric mystery with a strong location.
What is known about Untamed season 2?
Netflix has renewed Untamed for a second season. As of Netflix’s March 4, 2026 update, production was underway on Oahu and Hawaii Island. Eric Bana is returning as Kyle Turner, with new cast members including Shea Whigham and Kelly Hu.
Season 2 moves the investigation from Yosemite to Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. Turner will investigate a mysterious death amid local tensions and the island’s volatile landscape. Netflix had not announced a release date in its latest official update available for this article, so claims that season 2 is already available—or that a specific premiere date is confirmed—should be treated cautiously.

Should you watch it?
Watch Untamed if you want a compact mystery built around a memorable American landscape, an investigator with personal baggage and a story about the way institutions and secrets persist in isolated places. It is especially suited to viewers who like the setting-driven tension of Yellowstone and the grim investigative atmosphere associated with True Detective.
Go in with measured expectations. The “Yellowstone meets True Detective” label captures the mood, but it does not guarantee the writing depth of either comparison. The most persuasive case for the series is simpler: Untamed turns Yosemite into an active force in a six-episode mystery and offers a clear alternative to city-based crime dramas.
